EVERY ROAD LEADS TO GARDA!

For the Brits driving to Malcesine, Garda, there are numerous different routes to choose from after crossing the channel to Calais. Everyone has their own preferences and every way is beautiful once you get to the Alps. Here is a summary of three main options.

Hard Left – Eastern route via Austria
Head into the left hand corner with a scenic tour of Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany.
Route - Calais, Lille, Charleroi, Luxemburg, Stuttgart, Kempten, Innsbruck, Brenner Pass, Malcesine
Time and Distance - 14h54m, 1250km *
Pros - Avoids the expense of French tolls and Swiss vignette, likely the cheapest route.
Cons - Slightly more time
Notes - Going via Belgium and Luxemburg saves French tolls and apparently fuel is cheap in Luxemburg too. Cross into Austria at Fussen and then two small passes take you to the Innsbruck Valley. Crossing Austria requires a Vignette that you buy at the boarder or at a petrol station approaching it. This is from 9.20 Euros for a 10 day pass and you don’t need one for the trailer. The Brenner Pass into Italy requires an additional toll.

Middle – via Switzerland
Tack on the shifts through the middle of Europe
Route - Calais, Reims, Nancy, Basel, Lucerne, Gottard tunnel, Milan, Malcesine
Time and Distance - 14h18m, 1196km *
Pros - Least mileage, quick route
Cons - Swiss vignette, danger of Gottard queue
Notes - A route through France passing St Dizier and Nancy helps avoid French Tolls and is as quick whist saving mileage to. Crossing Switzerland requires an annual Vignette for 40 CHF (about £33) and you also need one for the trailer too, however this does include the Gottard tunnel. Buy a Swiss Vignette at the border or at a petrol station approaching it. Try to avoid rush hour at Basel and also beware of accessing the 17km Gottard tunnel at busy times on Fridays and the weekend as there can be long delays. Worth getting there early or late, otherwise maybe consider the San Bernardino alternative to the east if it is bad. If there are queues and your are not too heavily loaded going over the top of the Gottard Pass (2106m) adds 30mins and is a lovely drive.

Hard Right - Western route via France
Tack onto port at Calais and head hard right to Mont Blanc
Route - Calais, Reims, Dijon, Geneva, Chamonix, Mont Blanc Tunnel, Milan, Malcesine
Time and Distance - 14h21m, 1301km *
Pros - Quick route, good roads
Cons - The expense of French tolls, Italian tolls and the Mont Blanc Tunnel
Notes - If you are happy to pay the tolls and the expensive Mont Blanc tunnel this is an easy trip on good roads and possibly less traffic issues. The charge for a car and trailer in the 11.6km Mont Blanc tunnel are 75 Euro return if under 3m high. However if you are over 3m high, like I will be, it would be 522 Euro return - Ouch!!!

*Times and Distances are from Google Maps with 20% added to their times to allow for refuelling, stops, tolls and driving with trailers.

I hope this summary is of some help - but please do shout up if I have made errors.

RS Aero European Championship

Thanks to RS Sailing for the fantastic boxed RS Aero European Championship Trophies. We don't race for these every year and that makes it so much more special when we do!

The event has more than doubled in size since the first RS Aero European Championship in Travemunde, Germany, in 2016 with over 100 sailors from 19 different nations.

RS Aero European Championship - Things to do at Malcesine

With so many parents, partners and families joining us for our RS Aero Europeans at Lake Garda it is not just about the sailing - or the sailors!
Here are just a few ideas for those not sailing;

Visit Malcesine, Torbole & Riva del Garda - each full of history and splender

Lake Trips & Cruises - Regular ferries & cruises from Malcesine's Quay

Cableway to Monte Baldo - climbs from Malcesine to 1760m for breath taking views over the lake and pleasant mountain walking.

Hiking & Biking - Lots of options from Malcesine and to the north of the Lake. Check out tourist info and websites...

Here are some images from the 2017 RS Aerocup at Malcesine, to help whet your appetite ready for the RS Aero European Champs. The bottom 4 where taken in the morning 'Peler' breeze.

* 'The two main lake Garda winds are thermal winds, which means they are bonded to the heating of the earth and water. There are two typical winds in Malcesine: Peler, the northerly morning wind, and Ora, the wind from the South, which usually starts after the Peler drops down.'

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

A reminder that competitors shall present during Registration;

Boat Insurance - Every competitor needs to show proof of insurance with a valid third-party liability insurance of a minimum coverage of 1,500,000 Euros. RS's insurance doc for the charter RS Aeros has already been received by FVM

Under 18s Consent Form - Any competitors aged under 18 shall complete an Under 18s Consent Form. This can be downloaded from the Notice Board area of the regatta website (http://fragliavela.sailti.com/en/default/races).

FIV Membership - This is for Italian competitors only who shall prove that they are in possession of the valid FIV Membership sailing license for 2019

*To be extra safe, I recommend you;
1) Email a photo or pdf of the necessary docs in advance
2) Bring a paper copy
3) Take a photo of them with your phone before travelling

Sail Numbers, Sail National Letters and National Flags

Please ensure that you have your sail numbers and letters ready for the Europeans!

Sail Numbers - As per the hull sticker on your transom and. As per Class Rules C.10.4 (a) (ii), (iii), Annex 2 and the Rigging Manual (p38)

National Letters - As per Class Rules C.10.4 (a) (v), Annex 2 and the Rigging Manual (p39) which shows how you can form letters from ‘digital 8s’ if required.

In summary...Numbers and Letters must be black, located as per the drawing & rules, starboard side above port side.
RS Aero 7 & RS Aero 9 - Minimum 300mm high sail numbers and letters with a spacing between adjoining characters, including opposite sides and from the leach of minimum 60mm)
RS Aero 5 - Minimum 230mm high sail numbers and letters with a spacing between adjoining characters, including opposite sides and from the leach of minimum 45mm

National Flags on Sails - As per Class Rules C.10.4 (b) (i) & (ii) & Annex 2. These add a nice bit of colour and interest and will be required at the Europeans. The Class Association will have these available for sale at the event at 5 Euros each. National Flags are required on the port side but you can add a 2nd one back-to-back on starboard too if you wish, Location is a minimum of 60mm under the letters and from the leach.

*Charter RS Aeros at the Europeans will be provided with Sail Numbers and National Letters but will need to buy their National Flag. If you keep the backing paper safe you can take them home afterwards to reuse!

Also…

Coloured Sail Flashes - These colour flashes at the back of the sail windows easily identify the RS Aero 9 (pink), RS Aero 7 (yellow) and RS Aero 5 (blue). If you have an older sail which does not have one yet then they can be collected from the Class Association or Race Office - no charge!

Trolley Stickers - Will help you find your own trolley again after the last day! Before the last day we can use each others trollies for efficiency. These sail number stickers can be bought for 5 Euros from the Class Association.

Hi David,

When the RS Aeros were at Garda in 2016 I stayed at the Picolo hotel, the one nearest FVM, transfer from Verona Airport was arranged by the hotel with a minibus company; who consolidate a number of transfers to hotels up the same lake shore.

It seems this is the norm in that region.

I don't accurately recall the fare.

For the information of others coming into other airports: Milan, Venice, etc. the same system: contact the hotel and they will quote and arrange with a minibus is/was available.

Also at Malcesine:

The hotels between FVM and Malcesine and beyond Malcesine down towards Garda run a frequent co-operative minibus service, I believe it used to be either hourly or half hourly. There is also a good public bus system operating.

And as there is a cycle way between FVM and Malcesine many of the hotels also have bicycles available: free to use at some hotels, nominal hire rate at others.

Walking to Malcesine did not take long.

100 ENTRIES! - We have hit the big 1-0-0 already for our Europeans at Garda with over a month to go!

There are three great fleets emerging. The RS Aero 7 fleet now has over 50 entries. The RS Aero 5's have over 30 with lots of youths and light adults signed up and there is a great showing in the RS Aero 9 big boys fleet!

Free hospitality at FVM starts for the RS Aeros on Friday 16th August.

Before that you should email Fraglia Vela Malcesine on [email protected] to check the availability. If possible, it has a cost of 10€ per day per boat, or 60€ per the whole week.

Large UK Trailer available - for a driver with car

Would anyone driving a trailer down to Garda be happy to take a larger trailer?

Do you have a vehicle capable?

Sailboat delivers have 3 boat and 6 boat trailers available for hire and RS may have a big one available too. You would then be able to take contributions from sailors needing/wanting their boats delivered from the UK.

With 3 months still to go we have over 50 RS Aeros already signed up for the big one - the RS Aero Europeans at Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy. 12 countries are represented and it is fantastic to see sailors from Argentina and Hungary for the first time at RS Aero events.

Top Tips for completing the FVM online entry;
- There is an English Language tab at the top of the page, if you find that easier
- Enter your expected rig size, this can still be changed at event registration
- Please can charterers enter sail number 'CHARTER'.
- By selecting Territorial *None* and Club *Other* another box will appear below to enter your Sailing Club.
- After clicking 'SUBMIT' you still need to click 'CONFIRM UNPAID' (to pay later) or 'CONFIRM AND PAY' (to pay now).
- Next week the entry list will be refined to be split into 3 separate rig size Classes.

Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Lake Garda, will host the 2nd RS Aero Europeans in 2019 after Travemunde, Germany hosted the 1st in 2016. As the 2019 World Championships are at the end of the year in Australia, we have a good opportunity for another summer Europeans!

For a special event and by popular demand we visit one of Europe's prime meccas of sail sports on the wonderful Italian Lakes where we can build on the success of our previous two visits.....
