RS Aeros at the Slipper Shiver - Emsworth Slipper SC, 6th JanuaryRound 3 of the RS Aero UK Winter Series
The 35 entries to this year's Slipper Shiver for Emsworth Slipper SC's annual open Pursuit Race included 12 RS Aeros. With the forecast of an increasing breeze the 9 rigs stayed in tied their bags and the fleet split into three 5 rigs and nine 7 rigs. The 5's had a 3 minute head start on the 7s who then had 70 minutes racing to catch them with the rest of the mixed fleet starting at at their allotted times.
The Nor'Easter provided a short beat to the very top of the harbour followed by a long downwind to the branch of the channels where we completed a few laps at the top of the tide.
Steve Cockerill took the lead by the end of the run and never looked back, pulling out a large lead over the other RS Aero 7s and eventually winning the race overall by a comfortable margin. Mark Riddington pulled off a lovely port tack start to catch the first shift for a nice lead at mark 1 and went on to catch the last couple of RS Aero 5s and Laser Radial just in time for the finish to take 2nd overall. It was fabulous to see RS Aero 5s holding their own on handicap with Toby Schofield (Felpham) taking out 3rd and Sarah Cockerill (Stokes Bay) taking 5th place. The conditions were ultimately a medium breeze full of testing gusts, lulls and shifts off the shoreline.
The RS Aero fleet produced some welcome visitors travelling to what has essentially recently been a locals event and it was great to have six RS Aeros in the top 10 overall. Maybe our busy event schedule, free flow of knowledge and regular training is starting to show some dividends!
Thanks again to Emsworth Slipper SC for a great day out and once again the turkey soup after racing was amazing - a whole tasty meal in a never ending cup!
