RS Aerocup Garda - Images from Day 3

Another day of magnificent racing on Lake Garda to wrap up the event! Racing was intense but ultimately no Magic Marine podium bibs changed colour on the final day...

Ben Rolfe GBR took the 9s from the ever improving Tomas Sandstrom SWE.

Peter Barton GBR battled back to take both races wins on the final day in the 7s and Per Christian Bordal NOR took the Aerocup 7 series for the second year.

Liina Kolk EST started the day just 1 point ahead in the 5s but Kate Sargent GBR smashed out two 1sts on the water. However Kate was scored over the start line in the final race giving the title to Liina.

Thanks to Seb Godsmark of SBG Films again for the awesome photos - Day 3 album here;

RS Aerocup Garda - Day 2
Another awesome day. Wind arrived on time with 10kn from the south at 13:00hrs steadily increasing to 15kn during the afternoon.

Per Christian Bordal of Norway continued his domination with a string of firsts showing magical downwind speed through the waves. Peter Barton fought back with some upwind speed to take a string of 2nds.

Ben Rolfe looks safe for the rtitle in the 9s already. In the 5s just 1 point separates Liina Kolk EST and Kate Sargent GBR going into the last day.

Over beer and pasta after the daily prize giving Per Christian was good enough to share the secrets of his downwind technique with the gathered fleet, developed from years sailing Europes and Lasers at top international level....thanks Per Christian!

Results after day 1
After a race briefing and a fantastic lunchtime opening ceremony spread, washed down by a couple of glasses of bubbly, racing got underway on a pristine blue sky day. 3 great races were held with the breeze increasing from 12kn to 16kn in the southerly Ora.

Norway is dominating the 7s, but GBRs Geoff Carveth battled back taking out race 3.
Liina of Estonia holds a narrow lead from Kate of Great Britain in the 5s.
In the 9s Sweden took the first race before Great Britain fought back to lead overnight.

RS AEROCUP : GARDA
09:00 A blue sky morning and the breeze is in! Conditions are fresh and inviting in the build up to the RS Aerocup at Malcesine.
The morning Peler breeze from the north out of the mountains is producing a gusty 12-16 kn on the east shore but white horses and likely a solid 25kn on the west shore. It is starting to weaken but well it stay in for the day? Or will the sun do its thing, killing the Peler with the Ora blowing from the south in the afternoon?

12:00 noon and the fresh northerly Peler wind is dropping off as expected. Will the afternoon have a light northerly or will the southerly Ora wind come?

13:00 Quite calm.
13:30 light southerly.
14:00 10-12knots southerly, the Ora is here! Windsurfs are planning and dinghies hiking, will it build further?

That is a new class record - we have had around 10 nations at events several times before but 11 is a first!
Last call, any more?

RS AEROCUP : MALCESINE
Fraglia Vela Malcesine
Lake Garda, Italy
22-25th September
Following the success of the first RS Aerocup in 2015 at Barcelona with 40 boats from 9 countries the 2016 Aerocup moves to the Italian Lakes, visiting the world renowned sailing mecca of Malcesine on Lake Garda.

Malcesine, Lake Garda
Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, and Malcesine lies on the eastern shore towards the narrow and mountainous northern end, often compared to a fiord.
Fraglia Vela Malcesine is sited on the doorstep of paradise, racing in the thermal breezes on the infamous fresh waters of Lake Garda, underneath the dramatic mountainous backdrop.
The stylish clubhouse, space and easy launching, all serve to provide perfectly memorable stay.

Thursday 22nd September shall be a coaching day to warm up and acclimatise! Then the RS Aerocup series shall be held for 3 days, Friday 23rd - Sunday 25th September.

Charter Boats
There will be RS Aeros available for charter at the RS Aerocup : Malcesine. The price is £240 (300 Euros) for the event and includes the transportation of theboat to the championship. Priority will initially be given to non European sailors who would
have difficulty bringing their own boats. If there are enough boats available they can be spread further, so get your name on the list! To book a charter boat for this event contact Peter Barton, email; [email protected]

UK Transport
For UK owners it is anticipated that, in addition to private travellers, RS Aeros may be loaded onto multi boat trailers either at RS HQ on Friday 16th September or after racing at the RS Aero UK Eastern Champs at Brightlingsea on 18th September. If either of these options are of interest please contact Peter Barton, email; [email protected]
