Magic Marine UK NATIONALS at WPNSA - Roundup & Review
Ages, Weights, Winners and Stats.
Report here;

Incredibly, after just 14 months of production, the RS Aero is right up there
at the top of the UK Nationals attendance leader board for any single handed predominantly adult class (even after deducting the 4 rig swapping double entries).
See the Y&Y leaded board here (Opt for; show up to 'all' in 'table format'); http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/class/attendance.aspx

and Weymouth produced a new record with as many as 60 RS Aeros (plus two Teras and a horse!) identifiable in this shot by Tim Robathan

CLUB CHAMPS

We have 7 clubs with 3 or more entries;
Hayling Island, Gurnard, Chelmarsh, Lymington Town, Royal Lymington, Downs and Isle of Man YC.
I propose a 'CLUB CHAMPS' where the 3 best results from each club in each of the 3 PY race result sheets count (9 scores).

FAMILY CHAMPS

We have 3 sets of 2 family members in the Aeros and I suggest we also open this up to combine with the Tera fleet (i.e. 1Aero +1Tera), spreading the family love, which quite noteworthingly adds at least 11 more. Based on cominbed final results.

Double Aeros are;
Rolfe,Freeland(3),Barnham,

Aero+Tera are; Davis,Storey,Peters,Batchelor,Hiscocks,Martin,Taylor,Jameson,Cope,Wilson,Caiger?

If I have missed any, please let me know.

MASTERS, YOUTHS & JUNIORS
Ok, combining responses from here and the Facebook group;
- lets match the ISAF Youth Worlds age and wording.
- lets make them all age as at 31st December, then they are set for the year, rather than re-calc every event.
Therefore;

MASTERS; Competitors shall be 55 years or over on 31 December 2015 (born on or before 31 December 1960).
That gives us 12 (I must have miscounted initially), which is a good number.

YOUTH; Competitors shall be under the age of 19 years on 31 December 2015 (born after 31 December 1996).
That makes 12 at this event, including the Juniors

JUNIOR; Competitors shall be under the age of 15 years on 31 December 2015 (born after 31 December 2000).
4 year difference from the Youth category, making 6 for this event - perfect!

UK NATIONALS - SOCIALS
At our inaugural AGM on Sunday some important business is to appoint a class Social Sec. In the meantime, here is the plan for the Nationals;

Friday
- Drinks at The Cove House Inn on Chesil Beach
[There is a wedding at the Academy on Friday so Spinnakers Bar at WPNSA is unavailable]

Saturday
- Early drinks at the Academy, late drinks at The Cove House Inn
- Recommended local eating - The Academy (cafe after racing), The New Inn (Easton, on right), The Balti (Fortuneswell - next to The Cove House Inn), Harbour Lights (Portland Marina)

Sunday
- BBQ from 18:00 (included in entry, extra tickets for sale at WPNSA office on Saturday)
- Early drinks at the Academy, late drinks at the Lazy Lizard in Weymouth Town!

The Cove House Inn
Worth a visit to enjoy its spectacular location on Chesil Beach and to celebrate the Inn surviving the storms of February 2014.

Chesil Beach, 91 Chiswell, Portland DT5 1AW

The Lazy Lizard
A Nationals at the Academy is never complete without a night out in Weymouth Town and the Lizard is a popular chilled out seafront bar.

Looking for research on age and performance - the best i could find was for running endurance events (used a 10K as that's a similar length to a race). Performance drops by 7.5% between 40 and 50, and then another 9.4% between 50 and 60. Suppleness decreases similarly though hard to give an objective mesure of that.
Endurance events are sometimes won by people in their 40s but not in their 50's or 60's. Obviously sailing isn't pure endurance as we have a lot of skill as well, but 55 seems a decent shout to me.

Chris,
8 total over 55 (not 8+4). Still better than opening it up to 20, I think.

MASTERS - from 69 entries we have;
0 over 65, 4 over 60, 8 over 55 and 20 over 50 on 29/8/2015.
I suggest we make it over 55 to have 8 in the category, agree?

YOUTHS - from 69 entries we have;
10 under 18, 9 under 16 and 6 under 15 on 29/8/2015.
I propose we make it under 18 to have 10 in the category, and a separate under 15 Junior category too (thanks to Magic Marine's generosity!), agree?

UK NATIONALS - FORMAT
As per the NOR & SIs and the flexibility therein, racing is planned on a similar basis to the recent successful 44 boat Lymington event;

- Racing and Scoring in 3 separate fleets (5,7,9) with 3 starts, except for a planned mass start for the first race of each day with an ADDITIONAL PY RESULT for that race in addition to extrapolated fleet championship result from it. The overall championship will be based on the separate Fleet results and the PY results will be in addition and secondary to the championship results.
[in the case of an extreme forecast, light or strong, one fleet may be relatively small. This ensures extra interest for everyone. At this early stage we should be open minded and this ADDITION will help us develop our understanding of the boats, rigs and how to have the most fun out of our racing]

- As we are 3 fleets it is planned that the Lady's, Master's, Youth, Club, Family etc prizes will be based on the PY series, as the best way of deciding an overall winner in each category.

- A change of rig after the first race will constitute a new entry, but will not incur an additional fee. So if the wind changes dramatically you can still chose to optimise a day's racing (enjoyment, participation & safety) although you will be blowing the series. Daily prize givings are planned as well as overalls.

UK NATIONALS - SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
- SIs are posted on the docs page along with the NOR, link below.

- At registration you will need to sign that you have read them (what a great idea!), so please have a look otherwise we will have a crowded reg office. At the Champs they will be on the Notice Board but individual copies shall not be handed out, in line with the RSAUKCA's green commitment.

- Under 18s; please print off the Parental Consent Form from that docs page, complete and bring to registration.

I would be disappointed if we are just sailing in Portland harbour. Weymouth Bay is one of the best sailing areas in Europe and this is the National championship we should be sailing in the bay!

The OK fleet are at Weymouth SC not to be confused with WPNSA. They will also be using Weymouth Bay for their sailing area, whereas I imagine we will mostly be in Portland harbour, so shouldn't be any problems with space on or off the water.
Looking forward to next weekend !

Hi Matt thanks for the info. I did speak to the academy this morning on another question but I also asked about access. They said they will be emailing all competitors with the access code so should not be a problem after hours. Plan to get there Thursday teatime so hopefully be able to drop off and book into my B and B. I have reserved a space on the training day so will be around Friday morning. See you then. Martin

Martin, I've just read that the OK fleet are there for their Nationals from Thursday through Sunday. That means the compound will be being used for them so there should be tons of space. Weymouth Sailing Academy has excellent security that needs a code to open the compound. That's the only thing stopping you getting in. Park in the car park, go to the reception which is in the left entrance, get the code then go to gates with the coded barrier to the right. Are you training on the Friday. If not, fancy a sail out in the race area. I'm getting there sometime Friday morning. Matt

We are delighted to now have Magic Marine on board as our event sponsor supporting our first UK Champs.

Online Entries streamed in over the weekend in time for the discount deadline and they continue to tick up with an incredible 56 entries to date! An outstanding achievement for the class at its first UK Champs.

CAMPING
For those looking to camp at the Nationals I recommend this farm camp site.
I stayed here in 2013 and it is the closest to WPNSA and a well kept secret. Fantastic views of Chesil Beach. Say you are with the RS Aero Champs and they will show you a nice pitch and tell the sheep to play nicely. They also have B&B, self catering and campervan hook-ups.

Chris, Whilst it does still seem early it would be wise to get super organised and make a booking as it is a Bank Holiday. For camping, being closest and with a fantastic view I recommend this Farm site that not many people know about (until now!);

 I stayed there in 2012. Great views and easily accessible.
I see they only take 20 tents...

RS AERO - UK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 (5,7&9)
Weymouth, Dorset (WPNSA)
Saturday 29th - Monday 31st August (Bank Holiday)

In our first year we have the fortune of being able to secure one of the UKs premier venues, Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, the hosts to the very successful 2012 Olympic Games.

The sailing area of the vast protected waters of Portland Harbour and the open sea beyond provide a variety of sailing conditions with a reduced chance of any lost days due to adverse conditions. Ashore the World Class facilities of the Olympic Venue are at our disposal.

Racing for three days over the Bank Holiday weekend requires no precious annual leave to be taken and the fast growing Aero5 youth fleet will be able to join the adults.

We will be sharing the venue with the RS Tera class, whilst our three RS Aero classes will have our own separate course area. Several Tera parents are already Aero owners and there are more on their way!
