RS Aero European Youth Team Racing Championship - Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, 26-29 Oct

After the huge success of the inaugural event last year the Italian RS Aero Class with the Sardinian RS Aero fleet at Lega Navale del Sulcis and the Italian Sailing Federation built on the event they have created with the support of the Tourism Department of the regional Government. The location was again in Cagliari at the marina-locality of Su Siccu with host venue Canottieri Ichnusa Cagliari. 10 two person mixed teams representing 7 nations took part for four days of international competition, youthful camaraderie and late season sun - all set within the wonderful culture and backdrop of the exquisite Sardinian city of Cagliari!

The final day offered a memorable day of team racing with perfect conditions. The various matches were clearly visible from the redeveloped waterfront where spectators could enjoy the fast action and hard fought international championship with 61 races, each of only about 8 minutes, decided the final results.

After a fierce final the Lithuanian Team (Nojus Volungevicius & Ruta Mazunaviciute) wins the 2nd RS Aero European Youth Team Race  Championship for Under 22s. They beat Italy 1 (Sara Murru & Davide Mulas) with 3 wins to 2. The Bronze went to Sardinia 2 (Alice Sussarello & Andrea De Matteis) after beating fourth placed Estonia 1 (Meribel Vahstein & George Paomees) with 2 wins to 0 in the 3rd place final.

After Saturday's "no wind no race", the last of the three scheduled days of the RS Aero Team Race Under 22 European Championships was perfect to say the least. In the late morning the sun came out and with it a fine south-south-easterly wind arrived with an intensity of 8 to 16 knots. Quickly the FIV Race Committee chaired by Roberta Righetti brought out the teams and once the race course was positioned in the 'Su Siccu' basin, the round robin started on Friday was finished, subsequently giving way, in addition to the semifinals and finals.

A series of matches called 'King of the Castle' raced the remaining teams, from fifth to tenth place. This 'King of the Castle' series gave the teams not qualifying for the finals the opportunity to improve their ranking and the biggest mover was Italy 2 (Elias Nonnis & Chiara Sussarello) who managed win 3 races to gain two places up from 8th to 6th before being beaten by Great Britain (Jonathan Bailey & Yana Skvortsova) who successfuly defended their 5th place.

The event proved to be exciting due to the characteristics of team racing, which in the semifinals and finals reaching the highest levels, with strategies, pre-starts, cover-ups, mock-tacking and engagements that were truly heart-stopping, with the fast action followed closely by the two teams of referees.

Many thanks to all the organisers for another excellent event. We look forward to returning again!
