COFFEE - in Sardinia 🇮🇹 at the RS Aero Worlds

I would like to manage expectations regards Sardinian coffee culture for many visiting nations!
Coffee in Sardinia is like a high performance boat, you are not buying quantity, you are buying quality. You are paying for less, not more, like the super lightweight RS Aero.

Coffee is served in espresso very small ‘thimble’ sized measures. If you ask for a large coffee you get a double espresso (double thimble!). Don’t expect any bucket cups and don’t order one in the hope of rehydrating! There may be scope for requesting extra hot water additionally, for a longer drink.

Here Guido, the Italian RS Aero president, demonstrates espresso ‘on the rocks’ in the adjacent Gracinna Bar last weekend, served with ice for more refreshment.

RS Aero 6 - Inaugural World Titles

Since the new rig RS Aero 6 rig size was launched in 2022 it has seen much praise from those who have tried it, filling a gap between the RS Aero 5 & 7 that includes a good proportion of the population.

The brand new RS Aero 6 World Championship Trophy is set to touch down in Calasetta this week! This trophy is the same design but a little smaller than the other RS Aero World Championship trophies. Whilst they are hugely impressive the smaller size, similar to our RS Aero Europeans Trophies, will be more practical for international travel and delivery

37 cometitoprs from 11 nations will contest the first ever RS Aero 6 World Championship title.
Who will be the first winner of this fine trophy?

UKRAINE - HUMANITARIAN RELIEF

It is great to see a Ukrainian entry to the RS Aero World Championship. We look forward to welcoming Sofia Naumenko who is combining RS Aero sailing with her ILCA6 sailing.

Additionally Boris Mezhibovskiy who is competing for the USA was born in the Ukraine and he moved to USA whilst it was still part of the USSR. His birth town of Kherson was submerged after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam last month, further increasing the ongoing humanitarian crises. The war and human suffering in the Ukraine continues whilst we enjoy the sailing paradise of Sardinia, only a couple of hours flight away.

Boris and I have a plan with the RS Aero World Championship hosts to help support the humanitarian relief charities working in the Ukraine. We have sourced mini Ukrainian sail sticker flags which are a quarter size of each nations sail flags. They will be available at Registration and may be placed on sails alongside your own national flag as a sign of support.

Donations are invited to a choice of three Ukrainian relief charities assisting with a mix of childhood, medical and refugee needs. QR codes to the charities will be available at Registration and on the Notice Board. Please see the attached flier.

Thank you for any support that you are able to give.

SAIL NUMBERS & LETTERS

Sail numbers must correctly match the hull and the national letters of the sailor are required for the World Championship.
It is recommended that you organise this before you travel. Order via RS Sailing +44 (0) 1794 526760 before the end of Tueday 18th if necessary.

All of the 41 charter RS Aeros are suplied by RS Sailing with the sail numbers and national letters already added.

As a summary...
- Numbers and letters must be black
- RS Aero 7 & 9s have a minimum size of 300mm and minimum spacing of 60mm between digits (including those on the opposites side) and from the sail edge.
- RS Aero 5 & 6s have a minimum size of 230mm and minimum spacing of 45mm between digits (including those on the opposites side) and from the sail edge.
- Starboard numbers go above port numbers, same with letters.
- Numbers go in the top two thirds of the 3rd panel down
- Letters go underneath that, just above (stbd) and below (port) the bottom batten
- national flag stickers go a minimum of 60mm below the port letters and at least 60mm from the sail edge.

National Sail Flags

The National Sail Flags for each of the 19 nations entered will be available at event Registration! There are enough for one each for everybody. They are free to those entered as Youth and Juniors (under 22) and 5 Euro cash to adults.

They look great and are required to be placed on the port side at least 60mm below the letters and at least 60mm from the leach

Past World Championship podiumers get their best medal position as a circle on the corner of their flag. It is great to see so many past podiumers entered this year!  Remember to collect the medal flag one if you qualify;
BRONZE; Noah Rees GBR, Andrias Sillaste EST
SILVER; Jan Renehan USA, Keith Hammer USA, Peter Barton GBR, Liina Kolk EST
GOLD; Marc Jacobi USA, Dan Falk USA, Dieter Creitz USA, Andrew Frost GBR, Rhett Gowans AUS

After registration closes if there are surplus sail flags then it may be possible to buy additional ones. Racing with a second flag on your sail is optional and it should then be placed back to back with the port one on the starboard side.

SLIP - SLAP - SLOP - SLURP!

Last weekend saw about 35'C (95'F) in Calasetta without a cloud in sight. Next week, as sailors start to arrive at the RS Aero Worlds, Sardinia is reported to be the hottest place in Europe topping 40'C+ (104'F+)!

To perform well and best enjoy our time at the World Championship all competitors will need to minimise any chance of sun burn, sun stroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration. Sun tans are not cool anymore. Sun burn is at best a painful discomfort. After time with the sun on your head you will struggle to think straight. Dehydation will debilitate you. So;
  • SLIP on a shirt
  • SLAP on a wide rim hat (Rooster - Bucket & Wide
  • SLOP on some high factor waterproof sun lotion. Repeat.
  • SLURP down some fluids!

HOW MANY RS AEROs CAN YOU FIT ON A LORRY? ðŸš› ðŸš›

Four stacks is easy, Beth was sure a fifth stack was possible and she was right! A new record and at leat 250mm to spare at the back there!

Five stacks of charter RS Aeros five boats high allowed for 25 on a lorry with the trolley stacking frames taking the load and each RS Aero to have all its kit inside ready for sailing. They are rigged up, each with the correct rig for their charterer and the sails numbered and lettered ready for action. The Entry List is now updated with the charter fleet sail numbers. Not quite reaching #4500 yet!

It was a horrible wet and windy day at RS today with the two lorries loaded with the 42 charter RS Aeros (25+17) and leaving for Sardinia. Those RS Aeros are looking forward to seeing the sun ðŸŒž!

Two Scottish ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ RS Aeros were also collected ready for the onwards transport by trailer - thanks to Sailingfast for bringing them south.

RS Aeros charters available for the worlds

Hi all, I am bringing my four RS Aeros from Tenerife to Calasetta. I will sail one and Victor Oeda one but I have two more for charter. They have been used for courses and charters for four years but are in ok shape, a few small dents but nothing to stop you to win the worlds. I have rigs and sails for 5, 7 and 9. 7 sails used, 9 sails almost as new and 5 sails quite new as well. Late info but unfortunate I didn't know how many of my Aeros I could fit on the trailer but it seems to be all four.

After the worlds they are for sale and I will drive up to Sweden from Sardinia, so a drop-off along the way works fine.

RS Aero Worlds - LNI Sulcis, Calasetta, Sardinia, 26-30th July
Thanks to Fiona Patton Ekins, RS Aero sailing roving reporter from Australia, for her great summary of our charming Worlds venue at Calasetta;

A look around Calasetta, host to the RSAero World Championships 2023, by Fiona Patton Ekins, AUS
' Calasetta is a nice, small coastal town on a small island off the south west corner of Sardinia. (In Australia I’m thinking a comparison would be to fly to Launceston and then drive to St Helens.) From Cagliari city and the airport, there’s a train and a then a bus which took us 2 hours, but by car it’s only one hour.

Calasetta is known as the White Town because most of the buildings are white. The main square and main street have plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and gelato shops. There are also small supermarkets, a pharmacy, and an ATM. No chandlery. The hotels are small local businesses and BnBs. Not all have free wifi but we easily connected to free wifi in the main street area. You can buy a cheap local SIM card at Cagliari or at the airport. We had lunch at a cafe in the Main Street, salmon salads and a drink each which cost total 25 euros, about Aus$20 per person.

The yacht club is small, more of a sailing school than a club as we know clubs in Australia. Upstairs are several rooms and downstairs is covered storage for about 10 Aeros, toilets, 1 female shower and 1 male shower. (I assume they will set up more for the regatta.) There is also a laundry where you can use the washing machines (handy for campers). We saw a few camper vans parked along the main road into town, 2 in town and a campsite further out of town.

Despite the idyllic conditions, there was no one actually sailing on the day we were there. It was sunny and a good sea breeze came in at 1pm. Next door to the yacht club is the Marina harbour office. They were friendly, welcoming and also spoke English and French. They said the Aero racing would be just off the coast from the club, and uses the concrete ramp in front to launch. They were not able to give me details about the Aero regatta setup, but said they regularly hold great regattas there.

Activities for families of sailors include several nice beaches where the water is clear and clean. There is bicycle hire, boat hire and excursions by boat and bus. Carloforte is one of my absolute favourite places in Sardinia and it is just a half hour ferry ride across from Calasetta.

Cagliari (no I’m not drunk in the video it’s pronounced KA YIA REE) is the main city and it’s just an hour drive away. Calgliari is a beautiful, ancient city with a walled city and castle and lovely cobblestone streets and laneways. Alghero is a beautiful town to visit and there are mountain villages and walks.

There’s also Carbonia (30min drive) which has large shops including a hardware store.
Have a great regatta! '

Good news for UK RS Aero transport!
The lorry to transport UK owners RS Aeros to Sardinia is possible and viable!

The plan is to take up to 25 RS Aeros in 5 stacks of 5 high. RS Aeros will sit on their own trolleys with the trolley stacking system taking the load. Latest version trolleys adjusted to 'low mode' are required.
RS are kindly assisting with loaning stacking kits, stacking & loading with their forklift at RS and booking the lorry. Beth Milledge at RS operations is acting for the UK Class co-ordinating the arrangements  and carnet for us.
The likely plan is to drop boats and stack them at RS Sunday am 16th July, collect from RS Sat am 5th Aug, with those RS Aeros available at Calasetta from Fri 21st - allowing up to five days training before the Worlds for the keenies!

I hope to be getting an email out next week with all the detail and figures for everyone who has expressed an interest to me to book their slot.
Please let me know if you would like to join the list of people interested in case their are spaces remaining.

CALASETTA ACCOMMODATION
Calasetta is a wonderful traditional southern SardiniaN port town situated off the main tourist trail. The marina, where the club is and the boats are launched, is at the east of the old town and the nearest beaches start at the west of the old town, about 10 minutes walk right across in total.

There is an abundance of well priced accommodation at or near the center within very close walking proximity of the club, old town and beaches. The old town is bustling with restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and festivities in the main square.

RS Aero World Championship 2023 to include the RS Aero Youth World Championship 2023
LNI Sulcis, Calasetta, Sardinia, 26-30th July

Wondering what to expect at the RS Aero World Championships this July?
The Photos from the Calasetta RS Aero Cup taken in early July 2022 should provide a good indication.

Over six days we never saw extremes of wind. The racing we had was held in 6-15kn with waves building with the breeze to reward good technique. The air and water were wonderfully warm, but covering up to protect from the sun and abrasion is wise.

Also, check out the Sail Week Calasetta 2021 Promo Video for a taster!

to include the
RS Aero Youth World Championship 2023
LNI Sulcis, Calasetta, Sardinia, 26-30th July

Calasetta stands on the island of Sant'Antioco off the south-western tip of Sardinia, a town with fascinating history, traditions, maritime cuisine and dream beaches.....and the sailing is fabulous! The fast growing RS Aero fleets in Sardinia and the Italian mainland, together with the idyllic location for international visitors, makes our 5th World Championship set to be a fantastic event!

Racing will be hosted by Lega Navale Sulcis, held over five days with up to 14 races in the open but protected luscious waters off Sant'Antioco. There will be racing in four fleets, RS Aero 5,6,7 & 9, with the Youth World Champs, Womens' and Masters' categories contested from those overall results.
