UK Youth Team Winter Training - Draycote Water SC, Rugby, UK, 21/22nd January

Thanks to Elliot Toms for his summary;
Saturday morning started off by with bright blue skies and we rigged our frosted RS Aeros followed by a mile run for the warm up to prepare for the day ahead. With no sign of wind initially we talked about boat manoeuvres. We then split into 4 groups and each having one topic to discs in our groups. The topics being light wind roll gybe, heavy wind roll gybe, light wind roll tack and heavy wind roll tack. After discussing amongst ourselves each group took it in turns to share and discuss with everyone what they had come up with. After completing this there was some wind so we headed out and made the most of it.
With a steady 5 knots we practiced our light wind tacking and gybing. We finished off on the water with a few races where you had to get to the top mark with only 1, 2 or 3 tacks and then the same amount of gybes on the way back down to the line. After doing a few of these races we headed back ashore warm up and debrief on the session.
Saturday was finished up with a meal for the sailors in the Dun Cow.

Sunday morining was a sunny but chilly start. After the briefing we headed out to make the most of the good wind. The first activites we did were in groups of 2 or 3, each person would head up a different side of the course on spilt tacks and then we would discuss which side worked best. After repeating a few times the next activity was then races with the top 3 boats going to an further offset mark to keep it all close. With the wind dying we headed back in to warm up and debrief to discussing what happened on the water and what worked well in the activities.

A good weekend practising our light wind sailing! Thanks to our coaches George Cousins and Sammy Isaacs-Johnson and to Draycote for hosting.
