TopTip2020 #22 - Stack Those Carbs! - by Caitie Atkin, GBR

Caitie Atkin has grown up in the RS Aero Class and loves to give it her all in the breeze, winning the windiest race at the 2019 RS Aero 5 World Championship in Australia. Here Caitie explains the importance on eating and stretching to prepare and recover effectively;

'STACK THOSE CARBS!!!!!!!!

Before - As someone that has spent time being at the light end of a rig, I have learned the hard way about the importance of eating the right stuff at the right time. At major events, it is common to have long, hard days on the water so it is vital to stack those (complex) carbs prior to sailing, so you already have energy stored in your body before you start on the cereal bars. As well as the physical benefits of this, it can also give you a positive mindset: that you have given your body what it needs to make it through the day.

After - At the end of a tough day of racing, your muscles will be tired and sore. This is because your muscles will have been worked hard and will have small tears in their fibres. Eating something high in protein as soon as you can after sailing will help your muscle fibres heal and grow back stronger, subsequently making you stronger as a whole! At the Carnac World Champs, I remember coming off the water and having some jerky, a protein shake and some ‘Graze’ veggie protein mixes, and each morning feeling recovered from the day before. This will also have been thanks to the amazing @Marc Jacobi for doing stretching and yoga sessions after sailing. Stretching is so incredibly important after exercise and will make you feel much much less sore and stiff the next day!

Yoga - In the lockdown, I am taking this opportunity to start practising yoga to become more flexible. Like others, I am still affected by past injuries. Doing yoga has allowed me to identify imbalances in both my strength and flexibility between sides of my body as a result of these injuries, and in time will allow me to strengthen these weaknesses. Having balance in your body will help with both recovery after racing and things during racing such as playing the mainsheet evenly on both tacks.
