Get the Basics Right!
by Karlijn van den Boogaard, NED

Karlijn van den Boogaard of the Netherlands is one of our keenest RS Aero sailors and she has steadily improved in her RS Aero, winning the Dutch RS Aero event circuit and taking a 2nd place in a race at the international RS Aerocup in Holland in the RS Aero 7s last year.

'Get the Basics Right!
Now that we are all in quarantine and a lot of people can not go sailing, it helps if you are fit for when you are able to go on the water again!
George already wrote something about that in Tip#4 https://www.rsaerosailing.org/index.asp?p=forum&fid=13&tid=8907 and I would like to add, what fits you and your routine will help the best. For me it is mostly HIIT training and yoga on my roof terrace. There is a lot on the internet now (you can ask me for good links).

If you do go sailing your RS Aero, then this really helped me:

Keep it going!
So if you loose speed, pay attention to what is happening inside your boat and don't focus on others too much. Just get it going again with feel and the basic principles that you know!
If you are an RS Aero 5 sailor in between the 7s and 9s, it can be overwhelming. Race your own race!
Upwind: Light/Medium winds, point high in flat water. In stronger winds focus on keeping it flat(!), sail lower through the waves and keep it steady.
Downwind: Don't over trim the sheet in on a reach. Windward heel on a run when by the lee - practice the balance!

The RS Aero has a steep but rewarding learning curve and you will quickly improve. It gives you direct feedback, at first I capsized a lot until the point that I just didn't anymore - and of course, smile! That probably goes automatically, especially when you are planing. To quote Greg Popp Tip#5: Just have fun!
