TopTip 2020 #16 - Eat, Gym, Sail, Sleep & Repeat! - by Elisa Lindskog, SWE

 In trying to master a new Class a strong attitude can overcome most challenges.
 Elisa Lindskog is a keen member of the RS Aero Swedish Youth Team that have sailed hard through the winter in the snow, ice and even darkness during their short winter days in Sweden! Two of the young Swedish sailors enjoyed trips to join the Rooster RS Aero UK Youth Team at Weymouth and Torquay in the late winter in a wonderful initiative to share some international youth training.
 Here, in excellent English, Elisa describes her training ethos in preparing for a new season;

Eat, Gym, Sail, Sleep & Repeat!

'My tip is to always go out on the water and make the most out of the session. I'm not the largest sailor, but to always push through on those breezy sessions has made me lose the fear for windy weather and given me a lot of confidence to enjoy them. But to do that we also need to prepare;
  • EAT enough. This is something I've learned when sailing the opti, when you don't eat you sail half as good and lose a lot of concentration. Eat when you can, because you never know when you get food the next time.
  • GYM sessions can be fun, make sure to make them a part of your routine. Not being strong enough when we sail, and knowing you could have done something to solve it, is the worst feeling ever.
  • SAIL your training sessions seriously and be sure to have fun. If there is a pause and I don't need it or someone is talking to the coach, do some 360° or practice your boat handling. We only need 6 sessions to make those extra 10min opportunities add up to 1 hour more of training.
  • SLEEP enough the night or even nights before and take advantage of every second on the water.
  • REPEAT!
Be on time to your sessions. I always aim to arrive at least 45 min before the briefing. Then I'm prepared to go out directly after the briefing and optimise the time on the water.

Lycklig segling och håll dig frisk! (Happy sailing and stay healthy!)
Elisa'
