Thanks. It sounds simpler for event organisers to not allow boats to touch marks without penalty.
If and only if it is written into the sailing instructions as an amendment then you are permitted to hit a rounding mark without penalty. This seems to apply to roughly half our open events. Penalties for other misdemeanours are not affected by this amendment so two turns are still required (not one).
I understand hitting marks is compulsory?
I was once told that hitting marks at RS Aero events is allowed and only one penalty turn is to be taken for other misdeeds such as obstructing another boat. Am I mistaken about this? Catamarans only do one turn penalties and 18 foot skiffs are allowed to touch marks as do windsurfers. Such changes have to be noted in the relevant racing instructions at qualifying events. It doesn’t transfer to club racing.
