|Home >> RS Aero Class Rules - Queries >> Broken pulley block: kicker to mast|
I've been using a soft shackle(homemade) for over a year now and haven't encountered any problems. I changed to the soft shackle so that I would never need any tools(e.g. shackle key) when changing rigs.
A club member suffered a broken pulley block on his kicking strap at Chelmarsh yesterday. I believe that the small contact area between the shackle near the base of the mast and the stainless steel strap on the pulley is not ideal.
In principle might it be allowable for a soft shackle, made from dyneema, to be used to connect the pulley to the cord strop on the mast? This may spread the load on the strap at point of contact and avoid the pulley strap breaking in two at that spot when under extreme load. Would this present any unforeseen other problem?
