Home >> Sailing Tips & Technique >> Newbie kicker outhaul settings question
It's hard to day, since there's variability in the length of the block leads on the kicker. Those are probably rigged by the dealer, or by you or a previous owner. Pay more attention to the sail shape and ability to point closer to the wind without losing a lot of speed. If you can find some good speed upwind, you're probably doing it right. If you can't point higher and faster than the Sunfish with the 30+ year old stretched out sails, then your sail shape is probably not right.
Look at the tell tales, and the seams in the sail. They tell you where the center of effort is, how flat or not flat the sail is. If you really want to fine-tune things, use an anemometer and a GPS speedometer to get your different marks set on the rig.

Read through what I can find on the forum, but I still am rather unclear.

Sailing a 7 rig (newish sail, so not streched presumably).   Sail on a small lake, rather swinging & unpredictable winds. Been sailing about a year, so still pretty green.   70kg

While I know the principle of how to adjust for different points of sail & wind speeds, I've got no 'starting point' to adjust from.

So...   let's assume sailing on a beat, 10knots.

I currently have the outhaul set so the retaining strap is on 9 on the boom. I've put a bit of tape on the kicker lining up with the cleat at 'off'.  I pull it in so the tape reaches the traveller, about 12".

Am I in the ballpark?

Thanks
