Home >> General Discussion >> Weight range for an RS Aero 6
Hello Duncan,
I too bought a 6 rig when it became available.  I'm 64 and about 83 kg, so I use the 6 rig when the wind picks up and I really like it.  I pair it with a 9 rig which I use for light winds.  I used the 6 rig at the Europeans(windy) last year and really enjoyed it, I'm sure that I would have done plenty of capsizing if I used my 7 rig, as David points out it can make a crucial difference.  I'm hoping the 6 class continues to grow and that I can find plenty of sailors in my age range to compete against in it.

All the best
Robert

I should have included this in my earlier post. Does anybody know if it's possible to borrow a 6 rig for a trial period? I sail at Whitefriars SC in the Cotswold Water Park, near Cirencester.

Thanks,

I, too, am approaching the big 70 and weigh in around 65 - 68 kg. I've sailed a 7 dor a few years now and, like Duncan and David, I struggle upwind in stronger winds. So a 6 rig seems very attractive but quite pricey. I will have to save some pennies.

Hi Duncan,
The Class website rig selection guide is currently being updated to include the RS Aero 6 and should be out in the next week or so. RS Sailing are creating a nice graphic to back up my detail.

The RS Aero 6 weight range is genarerally around 60-75kg, centering a round a opoint in the high 60s. So at 68kg you are about perfect for it.
Additionally heavier sailors are reporting that they are enjoying it to keep them on the water both as they get older or as the wind increases.

Duncan, I sailed a Standard Laser for many years but once into my sixties dropped down to a Radial and it suited me much better. I have been about 65 kg for many years and pretty fit. When I decided to sell the Laser and get an Aero, I spent a lot of time researching the whole question of rig size and weight matching and concluded that I would need to purchase an Aero 7 (since the 6 was not then available) but had reservations about coping in windy conditions. My reservations were proved in practice and despite adjusting both downhaul and vang to suit windy conditions, I still found the need to lift the daggerboard an inch or two to keep the boat anywhere near upright. I was therefore a keen supporter of the proposal for the 6 rig. Last year I turned 70 and bought a 6 rig as soon as they became available. I am finding it so much better and it has even made me relish windier conditions going upwind. In conclusion my personal research and practical experience has indicated that the 6 rig is much better suited to lighter people like us. I see that the number of 6 rig entries in open events seems to be growing well and as such will hopefully justify the development and availability of this rig.

I have raced an Aero 7 for a number of years and now that I am knocking on a bit (62 and three quarters) and not that heavy (68kg after a few pies) I am thinking about getting a 6 rig, particularly as I start to struggle in anything above 14knts with the 7. The rig guide on the RS site is not as accurate as perhaps it could be and there was an updated one a couple of years back which appeared to be better (taking into account waves, slill factor etc). Has anyone undertaken any further research into the Aero 6 rig weight range. Thanks Duncan
