The RS Aero fleet of 21 boats competed strongly over the weekend. A great weekend in this idyllic location was had by all, even given the very light winds on Sunday.
Congratulations to Gary Ratcliffe (Georges River SC, RS Aero 7) on the win.
With 90% of the fleet calling the day done, amidst a ‘Mill Pond’ on the final afternoon of racing at Port Stephens, it was the ‘old dog’ who would stay to the very end ….. just hoping for the chance of some wind and an opportunity to turn around a 2 point deficit.
As the event leader, talented Olympian Ben Austin, could only watch on from the shore, the RO took the unexpected position of going into one last start sequence! In 1-3 knots in a strong tide, surrounded by large pockets of no breeze at all, the likelihood of a race finish to change the leaderboard was low…… very low. But ultimately …….. Gary snuck around the track sailing from breeze line to breeze line, and finish the race and claim the overall title; and prove that ‘you’ve got to be in it, to win it!'. Never give up whilst there is still a chance of a win. Gary was so pleased with his come-back victory, he went out and got the tatoo during the apres-sail drinks!
Lyndall Patterson (Royal Prince Alfred YC) took 2nd and was 1st RS Aero 6, with Bruce Murphy (Georges River SC) in 3rd in his RS Aero 7. Top RS Aero 9 was Justin Bakker (Balmain SC) in 6th and top RS Aero 5 was Johanna Stromqvist (Balmain SC).
