Sat 5th and Sun 6th April in SSBC were two totally different days on the Broadmeadows Estuary as SSBC hosted the RS Aero Eastern Championships 2025.
Saturday, the visiting RS Aero fleet arrived bright and early from Greystones SC, Royal St George YC, Howth YC, Waterford Harbour SC and Ballyholme YC to a brisk easterly and a forecast of 17-23 knots, which did not disappoint and provided for some exciting racing on the estuary. After the briefing, the Race Committee and support boats launched ready for the day ahead. With all 12 competing boats on the water and the 3 lap Olympic course laid directly offshore from the clubhouse providing a great viewing point to watch the races from onshore, the 1st race commenced on schedule at 11:55. The RO Siobhán Broaders and ARO Declan O’Brien proceeded to run another 3 races in quick succession in challenging but enjoyable conditions. With the 4 races completed by 2:30pm, a tired but happy fleet returned to shore for some very welcome chilli, hot drinks and race analyses. Daragh Sheridan from Howth YC the overnight leader on 3 points followed by Roy Van Maanen on 6 points.
Sunday, in contrast, was sunny with 7-12 knots forecast. The course for Sunday was 3 lap Windward Leeward with reach to finish and 2 races scheduled. The lighter airs, rig variance and option to go port or starboard at the leeward gate provided for excellent competition and position changes on the water in both races with final overall results in the RS Aero Eastern Championship’s 2025.
Congratulations to Daragh Sheridan (Howth YC) winning from Roy van Mannen of Greystones SC in 2nd and Paul Phelan of Greystones SC in 3rd.
