Write-Up

RS Aero North American Championships and US Sailing Singlehanded Championships
Richmond YC, San Francisco Bay, California, USA, Sept, 6-8th

Thanks to US Sailing for their summary report;
The Bay didn’t disappoint for day one of the US Singlehanded Championship, hosted in conjunction with the RS Aero North Americans. 24 sailors from across the country (and the world) gathered at Richmond Yacht Club for the kick-off of three days of epic sailing and camaraderie.
Breeze and sea state built throughout the day, reaching nearly 17 knots by the final of three races. Australian Robyn Ratcliffe leads the women’s fleet, while Dan Falk leads the men’s fleet, each with a total of four points. Both sailors took advantage of the big breeze, hiking hard and powering through the short, steep chop. No pain, no gain - “everyone had huge smiles on their faces,” said Ratcliffe.
Back on shore, competitors enjoyed Dark N’ Stormy’s from Goslings and PolarSeltzers during their communal debrief, where the leaders from the day break down their successes and failures for the benefit of everyone in the fleet. A rising tide lifts all boats!

Day two delivered both the smiles and the wind as San Fransisco Bay shined once again for sailors at the US Singlehanded Championships at the RS Aero North Americans. Similar to yesterday, each race here is a battle, with competitors grinding for every inch. Our two leaders from day one stayed strong in the face of three more races in 14-18 knots and short chop: Dan Falk of Seattle remains ahead of the RS Aero 7 fleet, while Robyn Ratcliffe of Sydney, Australia, leads the RS Aero 5 fleet.
But the US Sailing's single-handed champs O’Day and Hanley trophies aren’t in the bag yet. Both leaders are trailed closely by second place. Jay Renehan is in the hunt in the RS Aero 7 fleet, only two points behind Falk, while in the RS Aero 5 fleet, Melissa Hale trails Ratcliffe by three points. The Race Committee has three races planned for the final day of racing - it all comes down to this!
But for now it’s time to kick back, relax, and unwind with Gosling’s Dark N’ Stormy’s and Sextant Wines at the regatta dinner.

After a short delay for the bay fog to clear and wind to fill Day 3 got underway in blue skies and a nice breeze. After three days of intense competition it all came down to the last race in the men’s division - Dan Falk takes the O’Day Trophy ahead of Jay Renehan. Robyn Ratcliffe wins the RS Aero 5 fleet, while Melissa Hale takes the Hanley Trophy as top American.

RS Aero 7 for the O’Day Trophy
1st - Dan Falk
2nd - Jay Renehan

RS Aero 5 for the Hanley Trophy

Peter J Barrett Sportsmanship Award (voted on by fellow competitors) - Barbara Smith

Outside of the fantastic racing, competitors got top notch hospitality from host club Richmond Yacht Club, who provided dinners and an after-racing drink cart stocked with beers and US Sailing sponsor PolarSeltzer. Goslings Rum brought the party with near-endless Dark ’N Stormy’s, while Sextant Wines provided wine at dinner and a bottle of sparking for each winner to have their celebration moment! Gill USA and New England Ropes helped sailors be prepared for anything by providing a rigging knife and spliced halyard to each competitors when they registered.

THANK YOU to all the hosts, sponsors, volunteers, race committee, and competitors for making this weekend spectacular!
