RS Aero Texas Championship Firecracker Regatta - Viridian Sailing Centre, Dallas, TX, USA, June 29/30
Thanks to Joan Lucas for her report;
Texas temperatures crept up to 100'F (38'C) for our RS Aero Texas Championship Firecracker Regatta, but we were fortunate to have good wind, starting at 15mph with frequent gusts from 20-25mph. Without any delays, 22 RS Aeros headed out to the L3, windward/leeward racecourse on Saturday morning. Although we had some very competitive, competent sailors, any jostling for position on the starting line was made good-heartedly and there were no formal protests between racers.
Only infrequent moans of despair were heard at the windward mark, which was set close to shore where the wind was especially shifty. It was the constantly changing direction and speed of the wind though, that made for good challenging racing conditions. Our PRO, Jason Adams, was able to get five races in on Saturday and three on Sunday before ending each day due to the heat.
Our young sailors did very well, including 19 year old Aston Atherton, who was first in the RS Aero 9, as well as the overall winner. Alexander Schwinn took second place in both RS Aero 9 and overall. Long Ta was winner of the RS Aero 7 and finished third place overall.
Next year the RS Aero Texas Championship will likely move to Lake Canyon Yacht Club in New Braunfels, but we will continue having the Firecracker Regatta at Viridian for families and racers young and old to enjoy. We also hope to begin a RS Aero Youth Championship at our lake.
Thanks again to everyone who helped bring our eighth annual Firecracker Regatta together!
