Paignton SC Christmas Cracker - Paignton, Devon, UK, 3rd Dec
Seven RS Aeros entered Paignton SC's annual Christmas Cracker, a 150 minute pursuit race on Tor Bay with the overall fleet made up of 27 mixed class dinghies this year.
With little wind throughout the morning the RS Aero sailors were tempted to upsize their rigs for maximum enjoyment. By start time a nice medium breeze of around 10-14kn had filed in providing a great day's racing. Race officer Nick Ripley set a 'P' course giving all points of sailing which allowed all designs opportunities to shine. The day was an excellent challenge and workout for those seeking practice to build skills over the winter.
The pace setter of the day was Simon Hawkes in his K1 who sailed through for a commanding lead to take the win from Peter Barton's RS Aero 9 in a comfortable 2nd. From 3rd down to mid-teens the race was just like a mixed class pursuit race ought to be with the fleet compressing together as the finish time approached. In the final moments of the race Luca Mitchell in his RS Aero 7 secured 3rd overall having just edged past an ILCA 6 on the run and managed to hold off just long enough the charge of the Merlin Rocket and Phantoms who were close behind by finish time. So it was fantastic to have two RS Aeros on the podium!
