RS Aero UK Youth Team Winter Training - Lymington Town SC, Hants, UK, 7/8 Oct

The first weekend of RS Aero winter training took place at Lymington Town SC over the weekend of 7/8th October. Now open to all age groups of RS Aero enthusiasts, an enthusiastic bunch gathered for some fantastic coaching lead by champion sailor and top coach, Ross Harvey.

It was a game of two halves with Saturday being blessed by a solid 15kts+ south westerly followed by a super light wind day on the Sunday.

In order to take advantage of the perfect conditions on Saturday, Ross held a fairly short classroom session to set the plan for the day after which we got straight out on the water to put it into action. Exercises and drills came thick and fast including start line trigger pulls, fleet starts, short races, rabbit runs and long downwind runs. After a solid 3.5 hours on the water and some aching legs (I speak for myself!), we headed ashore to talk over the session. With plenty of video footage to go over, Ross guided us through our on-water performance, from which we all learned a lot.

Sunday’s session was more of a challenge in terms of the weather but not a minute was wasted! More time was spent in the classroom in the morning while we waited for the wind to fill in. Once enough breeze arrived we headed on to the water to practice our skills again; this time focussing on very light wind technique, in particular roll tacking and finding the balance point of boat heel to maximise pumping, in some cases accidentally going past the balance point!

Overall it was a fantastic weekend of coaching, thanks to Ross for the expert tuition and for a strong start to the 2023/24 series of RS Aero winter training sessions.
