Swiss RS Aero Training Weekend - Lake Hallwil, Switzerland, 15-17th Sept 2023

The annual Swiss training and racing event took place at the SC Hallwil in Beinwil from 15-17th Sept with Jorn Domres of Germany conducting the trailing. Since our previous RS Aero knowledge ranges were from “expert and regatta champion” to “just the proud owner of a brand new RS Aero” the scope was broad and kept fun.

On Friday - after the trim inspection of the individual boats and in particular the assembly and optimization of the new one - we were soon on the water: tacking, gybing and 720s - and all of this on an up/down course. Unfortunately there wasn't much wind, a measly 2kn from N/E, but there was a lot of sun and soon everyone was cooked. It was then a good idea to get to know the boat well from all sides, to practice rotation around the y-axis. For dinner we organized a BBQ in the club.

Saturday morning we met for breakfast and then continued practicing maneuvers around the buoys, with even less wind... Followed by a photo and video debriefing in the club. In the afternoon there was a lot of wind - the infamous west rodeo wind that blows through Lake Hallwil with fronts. Rather unusual for our sailing guests from Lake Biel and Lake Maggiore - wind from all impossible directions. The app developed by Toni (aka Philipp) and Jorn was then used during the runs and measured us professionally (https://sailingMetrics.com/).

The 10 lively boats were really fun for some of the spectators at the lake, and we probably inspired some of our club members too. At least a good laser sailor, for who we have borrowed the RS Aero of a colleague. He was very impressed. We finished Saturday with a regatta with 4 races, results below. In the evening we picked up Asian food at the club.

On Sunday the wind was definitely gone and – although ordered – there were some delivery problems. There was enough for exercises such as sailing without a rudder or optimized sailing downwind. Around midday there was some tinkering before the end, and Jorn gave some of the boats a more contemporary look by replacing the odd sheet, a few rubbers and a number of Cunninghams. 

Overall, a great weekend with lovely and motivated sailing colleagues, lots of fun and a lot of aha moments. Hopefully we will
Deepen what we have learned. It would definitely be nice to meet again soon for RS Aero sailing! And if necessary - for winter training at the end of December to prepare for the traditional and highly unofficial SCH New Year's regatta...

🇨🇭 RS Aero Trainingswochenende, Segelclub Hallwil, SCH,  Beinwil, 15-17 September 2023

Von Freitag, 15.9. bis Sonntag 17.9. fand  im SCH in Beinwil (https://www.sc-hallwil.ch/) ein Aero Trainingswochenende mit dem (kontinentalen…) “Aeroflüsterer“ Jörn Domres (https://rsaero.info/) statt. Da unsere Aero-Vorkenntnisse von “Experte und Regattachampion” bis. zu “gerade stolzer Besitzer einer brandneuen Aero” reichten, musste für jeden etwas dabei sein – und das war es denn auch.

Schon am Freitag – nach Trimm-Inspektion der einzelnen Boote und insbesondere Konfektionierung und Optimierung des neuen – ging es bald aufs Wasser: Wenden, Halsen und 720^o – und das ganze dann auf einem Up/Down Kurs. Viel Wind gab es leider nicht, eine schlappe  1 bis 1.5 aus N/E, dafür viel Sonne, bald waren alle gar.

Da bot es sich dann an, das Boot von allen Seiten gut kennenzulernen und die Drehung um die y-Achse zu üben. Zum Abendessen organisierten wir uns mit BBQ im Club.

Samstag morgen trafen wir uns zum Frühstück und übten dann weiter Manöver um die Bojen, bei noch weniger Wind … Anschliessend Photo und  Video-Debriefing im Club.

Am Nachmittag gab es zur Regatta noch richtig Wind – den berüchtigten West-Rodeowind, der am Hallwilersee mit Fronten durchzieht. Für unsere Segelgäste vom Bielersee und dem Lago Maggiore eher ungewohnt – Wind aus allen unmöglichen Richtungen. Bei den Läufen konnte dann die von Toni (aka Philipp) und Jörn entwickelte App zum Einsatz kommen und uns professionell vermessen (https://sailingMetrics.com/).

Die 10 lebhaften Boote machten einigen Zuschauern am See wirklich Spass, und vermutlich haben wir auch so einige unserer Clubmitglieder anstecken können. Zumindest eine gute Laser-Seglerin, der wir die Aero eines Kollegen ausleihen konnten, war schwer begeistert.

Am Abend haben wir uns dann asiatisches Essen in den Club abgeholt. Sonntag war der Wind dann definitv aufgebraucht, und – obwohl bestellt – es gab etwas Lieferschwierigkeiten. Das reichte dann noch für ganz gemeine

Ubungen wie ohne-Ruder-Segeln oder optimiertes vor-dem-Wind-Segeln. Gegen Mittag gab es vor dem Abschluss noch etwas Bastelei, und Jörn verpasste manchem Boot einen etwas zeitgemässeren Auftritt durch Ersetzen der einen oder anderen Schot, einiger Gummis und einer Anzahl Cunninghams.

Insgesamt ein super Wochenende mit lieben und motivierten Segelkollegen,  viel Spass und einer erheblichen Anzahl Aha-Momenten. Hoffentlich werden wir alle brav sein und uns die Zeit und Ruhe nehmen können, das möglicherweise. Gelernte ganz heftig zu vertiefen. Es wäre auf jeden Fall schön, sich bald wieder zum Aerosegeln zu treffen! Und wenn nötig – zum Wintertraining Ende Dezember, um sich auf die traditionelle und höchst inoffizielle Neujahrsregatta des SCH vorzubereiten…
