Haringrace - Jachtclub Veere, Netherlands, 18 June Congratulations to
Gerard Vos! Gerard loves racing his RS Aero to take on mixed fleets in long distance races in the Netherlands and three weekends in a row saw his enthusiasm and perseverance pay off with a corrected time victory after a 3 hour race from Veere near
Aquavitesse!
Thanks to Gerard for his summary;
I had my private 'Triple header' (non F1 fans: 3 three consecutive regattas), starting with the 'Rijnrace' 2 weeks ago, last week the '6 hours Westeinder' and yesterday the 'Haringrace', organized by Jachtclub Veere (many RS sailors probably know Bruinisse (Aquavitesse). The city Veere (founded in the 12th century) is more to the south west in the Dutch province Zeeland).
On Saterday the course was sent by email. Much to my surprise it was a downwind start. But with a start line in front of Veere harbour (and many spectators) a 'normal' start would make the fleet cross the ferry boat route.
So the first legs basically were all down-wind. The competition hoisted genakers and spinakers but i was able to cling to the fastest boat of my class, 'Bubbles' a Beneteau First. I was able to catch them in the 4 mile up wind leg. Then the obvious problem: i was now the #1 in the field and lost my 'pilot'... so i sailed to the wrong buoy. I quickly realized that and turned, but finished 3 minutes after 'Bubbles. To me that looked like the wrong side of the margin, but at the prizegiving it became clear that i calculated with the wrong handicap: it was a 2 minute win! (after 3 hours sailing).
