Westeinder Long Distance Race - WV Schiphol, Netherlands, 10 June

After the successful resumption of the 6-hours race on the Westeinder last year, the committee has strengthened itself and organized another successful edition. Sailors and enthusiasts from the region and even from outside the region gathered at WV Schiphol on Saturday 10 June to either participate in the race or to watch the race from the water in a relaxed way.

Congratulations to Gerard Vos winning the Open Class in his RS Aero 7 with a distance of 46.2 kilometers.

Thanks to Gerard Vos for his summary;
"It was the hottest day in The Netherlands so far, with temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celcius. No better place than to sail on a lake with a gentle 10 knots wind! The fleet with 20 participants was very diverse and varied from a fast MaxFun 25 (handicap 85.5) to Lemsteraak (an old Dutch sailing vessel) (handicap148)…. and 1 RS Aero (107).

I had an excellent start and arrived 3rd at the first buoy, trailing that Maxfun and an International 806. They hoisted genakers and started to sail downwind. I was clueless of the exact  location of the bottom buoy; that leg was 3.5 km long! The rest of the fleet simply followed me. After the first (8.5 km) round I knew the location of the buoys, so i sailed the other round 6-10 minutes faster. The race course was triangular on paper, but in reality it was an up-and-down course; no nice planing beam reach; typical a leg where an RS Aero can outperform the competiton. The down-wind legs were most trouble, sailing in front of a fleet with spinakers. During the day more and more obstacles, as the number of mooring boats increased. But that all adds up to the fun!

The overall winner was the International 806 with a corrected distance of 47.5 km. I became second overall (but winner of the ‘open boat’ class) with 46.2 km.

Thanks to the sponsors Zeilwinkel Dragt, Chocolaterie Martinez , Bakkerij Müller, Slijterij Mitra and RS Jachttechniek, many great prizes could be awarded"

SAVE THE DATE - 8th June next year for another great edition!
