Write-Up
Burghfield Breezer (SailJuice), Berkshire, UK - 27th Dec 2021An entry of eight RS Aeros produced the largest class fleet at the inaugural Burghfield Breezer, a new addition to the Selden SailJuice Winter Series. The weather was overcast but mild temperatures and a 5-11 knot breeze through the day produced some great winter racing around Burghfield's tight race track.
Race 1 was a handicap race with 3 starts split into speed grouping. Several RS Aeros managed to sling shot themselves out of the 'medium fleet' start for a clear dash up the first beat. After three laps with enough wind to trundle nicely and full hike occasionally the corrected times were good with the RS Aeros scoring 1, 2, 7 & 8th from the 60 boat mixed class fleet.
Race 2 after lunch was a Pursuit with the RS Aero 7s starting 24 minutes into the 100 minute race, to chase after the slower early starters and be chased by the faster boats. The breeze clocking right saw a heavy starboard bias on the startline causing a couple of the RS Aeros to be over eager and OCS at the gun. This time the breeze was a little lighter and the early starters had bolted. Places were hard gained with many slower boats trundling around at similar speeds to the RS Aero 7s. The lead RS Aeros grafted away at it to make it through to 11th & 12th.
Overall that left the lead RS Aero 7s in a creditable 3rd, 6th, 8th & 20th counting both races which demonstrates some good versatility of the class over a range of conditions as it is likely that a little more breeze may have suited us better.
Many thanks to all involved at both Burghfield SC and SailJuice for hanging onto the event whilst without restrictions it was possible to proceed. A 'can do' attitude for the good of the sport and a valuable outdoors based opportunity to meet friends and exercise during the festive period.
