Saturday was the start of great weekend with a clinic for both owners and new RS Aero sailors as we had the privilege to use 5 charter RS Aeros supplied by RS Sailing. What a perfect start of the weekend, a great turnout of 15 sailors, a warm welcome at this beautiful club and great winds between 12-24 kts. The morning session was used to improve boat handling and familiarize for the less experienced and a nice lunch break gave the needed energy for the 2nd part. The afternoon sessions was used to train the racing skills with lining up, swift starts and very short laps.
Sunday - Race Day!
Exciting conditions with winds in the forecast up to 26kts during the day. A good turnout of 12 sailors - some more confident and some a bit in doubt wether to take an RS Aero 7 or a 5! We sailed a mixed fleet on PY rating and did 5 short races on a triangle-loop course. Well managed and worked out fine in these conditions. Some decided to stop earlier after some capsizes and the chilling and windy conditions were energy drainers. The RS Aero 5’s had an advantage over the RS Aero 7’s in the strong breeze and in general almost as fast as the 7’s. Skills or the PY rating?
The 5th and final race ended just in time, a hefty shower hit the lake and was building up gusts well over 30kts, some of us were flying, working hard to stay in the boat and some went for a swim. All landed back safely on shore with huge smiles and great stories to share at the bar.
The RS Aero owners already knew what this boat can do and even learned more but for the charter sailors this was something else than they had experienced before!
What a great weekend and a big thanks to Thirza, Robert & Mark from the local RS Aero team at GWV de Vrijbuiter, the trainers Bart & Luuk, the race committee, volunteers and RS Sailing Aquavitesse for support and providing the charter boats.
