Write-Up
RS Aeros at the Fontelieu Fall One-Design Regatta - Cedar Point YC, CT, USA, Sept 28/29Thanks to Marc Jacobi for his report;Sailors came from all over New England to participate in the 2019 CPYC Fontelieu Regatta, The 16 strong RS Aero fleet was the largest class in attendance. New owners came down from Vermont. Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut were all represented and a strong contingent came across from New York state. The RS Aero entry was underpinned by a good local turnout from Cedar Point YC.
Two wonderful days of racing, with winds ranging from 3-15+ knots tested sailors' abilities. Saturday was sailed in a sea breeze that started light, built promisingly, but then backed off again. 5 races were sailed, then back to the club for a yummy BBQ dinner under the pagoda and a clear, starry sky. Sunday started with a brisk, shifty NWly that had us planing to the race area, but it eventually dropped, then built again for the sail home after three more races.
Once again the RS Aeros made favorable impressions, both in the boat park and on the water, with lots of sailors asking questions. I lent my boat out to a sailor for the last race and he had a big grin on his face afterward, despite the trying conditions and unfamiliarity with the boat. It was hard getting him to switch back afterwards!
Results were close throughout the fleet. After 8 races, 9 points separated 4th from 6th, 10 points between 7th & 10th, and 2nd & 3rd were decided by tie-breaker! Top 3 in RS Aero 9s were Madhavan in 2nd overall, Jim in 5th and Andrew in 15th. The RS Aero 7s were often able to keep up in the variable conditions, with first-timer Amnon sailing a terrific regatta to place 4th overall (winning the last race!). Dave sailed smart and fast placed 3rd, with your scribe taking the win.
Great sailing, great sailors, great conditions, great club and a great regatta! We look forward to returning next year!
Next up on the New England RS Aeros calendar is the American Yacht Club HP Regatta at Rye, NY on October 12/13. Full details are linked via the
