Keyhaven New Years Day Rum Race - Keyhaven YC, UK

Write-Up

RS Aeros at Keyhaven YC's New Years Rum Race - 1st January

Blowing away the New Year celebrations five RS Aeros ventured to Keyhaven at the western end of the Solent on New Years Day to join Keyhaven's Finns, Lasers and Scows for the premier event of the world's 2018 sailing calendar, Keyhaven YC's New Years Rum Race!

An early start was set for the top of the tide at 10:00. However, you can have too much of a good thing and with an exceptionally high tide competitors arrived to find the flood gates closed by the Environmental Agency, blocking access to the slip. Whilst not an issue to RS Aeros, able to easily lift over, a plan had to be made to enable the Finns to launch. A few hurried phone calls (the tide waits for no sailor!) and the marina managers next door kindly came down to open up and move a crane to allow access for launching through their yard.

Whist there was much wind about overnight the predicted weather window came true with just a light breeze. Liam Willis in his RS Aero 9 and  Cy Grisley in his Finn pulled clear, hotly pursued by the RS Aero 7s trying to stay close enough for the PY win. With the tide so high the marshes were just submerged making navigation identifying and avoiding the shallows an extra challenge!

Ultimately after a lap of the marshes, out onto the Solent and back, Cy took line honours and the PY win from Liam Willis in 2nd. Simon Moss took 3rd on the water in his Finn but on PY it was Peter Barton and Karl Thorne who had a close finish for 3rd. Chloe Martin pipped fiance Ben George for 4th RS Aero.

RS Aero 5 sailor Jon Harvey opted to go 2-up in his Scow to win the Scow division - and overall too when combined with the main fleet!

Warming rum tipples greeted sailors ashore with the winners receiving a bottle each, plus one for the early awoken marina manager for saving the day!

NEXT UP
This Saturday 6th sees both the UK Winter Series Round 3 at Emsworth Slipper's Slipper Shiver  and Sailjuice Series round 5 at King George.
Lymington's Perishers series is also open invite every Sunday in Jan-Feb from the 7th.
The friendly RS Aero / Finn mid south coast showdown continues at Highcliffe Sailing Club's Icicle series on the 21st January with two races around Christchurch harbour on the top of the tide on alternate Sundays.

Here is a video from just along the Solent of the LYMINGTON AUTUMN TRAINING 2017
Thanks to David Ellis, our 2016 RS Aero 7 UK Champion, for putting together this great playlist of 11 short training videos in November. Lots of useful gems to spot, analyse and discuss (in the forum) there!

Results

*RS Aero 9 PY ought to have been 1024 (not 1028). Liam still took 2nd overall, but instead of by 13 seconds by just 2 seconds from Peter on corrected time!
