The Roadford Rocket, Cornwall
08/03/2015 - 08/03/2015

Write-Up

Congratulations to Richard Willows for his 15th out of 59 entries at the Roadford Rocket in West Devon.

Richard reports;
The Rocket went extremely well. We had a good force three wind from West to North West during the event which was across the lake and occasional stronger gusts, with the wind getting lighter during the last lap.

We split the start into four groups with the non-asymmetric single handers starting last, with about a dozen of us. With a bit of local knowledge I figured on going right on the first beat and was rewarded with second place at the first mark. After that for the first 90 minutes I kept a pretty good pace with the Phantom and leading Blaze and I have to say that sailing the Aero was a complete joy. In those conditions it tracks up wind extremely nicely and was quick on the plane on the reaches.

I would think until the last lap I was reasonably well up. Unfortunately, the race finish was signalled when I and the other single handers were right at the top of the lake with another 25 minutes sailing to go, and I think we probably all lost four to five minutes compared to previous laps. But overall tremendous fun and in the company of the other boats the Aero behaved extremely well. I found on the reaches that having the kicker off a little more than looked right and sheeting directly off the boom gave a lot of feel and added oomph to get the boat on the plane. Once the wind went light, the supernovas had more speed on the runs and they made up a lot of lost ground but hey ho, the sun was out by then. Roll on Starcross next week, forecast so far looks good but as we found last weekend all can change in 48 hours, best wishes, Richard.
