The story so far - R1 Staunton Harold - no wind so sadly the event was cancelled. R2 Draycote Water - wind was not the issue as 45kts came through the fleet!
After feast or famine blighting the first 2 rounds we looked forward to R3 at Carsington Water. The weather forecasters were not helping with strong winds predicted, coupled with low temperatures & lots of rain & hail. All in all this, together with Easter hols put some off travelling.
The 6 visitors arrived to complement the 1 home club entry on a dark & blustery morning
Three races were held back to back set against the backdrop of stunning North Derbyshire hills on the boundary of the Peak District.
Racing was held on a mass start with results worked out on handicap for the 3 rigs represented. Each race had multiple leaders and everyone had their moments of glory.
Race 1 was gnarly with strong gusts funnelling down the lake testing everyone’s endurance & reaction times. Line honours went to Joe Scurrah with Rebecca Knock taking 2nd on handicap & Chris Larr 3rd. After Race 1 as a cloud darker than space itself slipped by, the Race team were forced to rotate the course. The competitors were meanwhile entertained by a heavy hail storm!
Race 2 was held in moderating winds punctuated by an even heavier hailstorm. Scurrah again took line honours but it was too tight to call if it was enough to hold off Knock, only to be confirmed it was at the end of the day. Richard Pye took 3rd.
Race 3 and the wind had dropped further & on this occasion Knock had done enough to take the win from Scurrah 2nd, who’d overhauled Pye into 3rd.
Sailors raced for the shore as yet another dark cloud approached over the horizon but in vain, as the hailstorm, the ‘best’ of the day hit the fleet.
We’d like to thank Carsington Water for their hospitality & look forward to returning in 2027 in hopefully warmer conditions.
There’s now a break until the 4th & final round of the Midlands Series to be held at Notts County SC in 12th September.
