Massapoag YC 76th Annual Regatta - Boston, MA, USA, Sept 6/7

The 76th Annual Lake Massapoag Regatta brought the smiles, the snacks and the close racing as always. 6 RS Aeros made the trek as the forecast read for huge gusts on Saturday and huge rain on Sunday, which turned out to be spot on. Day 1 brought minor shifts from the Lake Massapoag spirits but gusts all the way up to 30 knots. The course was an upwind, downwind, upwind - so sometimes 20 minutes of racing came down to the final 2 shifts. As the breeze picked up, survival mode instincts were needed. The rain started Saturday night and has not stopped as I am currently writing this on Sunday night. We were already going to be wet anyways loading up our trailers, so why not get 2 races in. Lake sailing made ever more challenging by tell tails stuck to your sail all day.
In the end it was Christian Klose, sailing in his first RS Aero regatta, in 6th. Giorgio Martelli in 5th sailing a 6 rig. In the battle of the 2 hometown favourites, Patrick Chokron lost out to Eric Aker by 1 point over 8 races. Marc Jacobi had so much more speed than everyone all weekend and controlled the fleet. However, his mind rounded the offset mark before his physical boat did, deemed illegal by the RC. This hurt his point total enough that Philip Myerson, of Bristol Yacht Club, battled out a regatta victory, with a worst race of a 2nd.
Thanks to all the volunteers at Lake Massapoag Yacht Club that make this regatta possible, the oldest running RS Aero regatta on the East Coast!
