Lago Maggiore International RS Aero Regatta - Cannobio, Italy, 6-8th June, ITA

Lago Maggiore International RS Aero Regatta - CV Leone, Cannobio, Italy, 6-8 June

The pretty Italian town of Cannobio on the shore of beautiful Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy saw 45 RS Aeros from 10 different countries, split across three rig sizes racing for three days between the 6-8th June. This was the seventh year of the Lake Maggiore International RS Aero Regatta and the second since it moved across the lake to Cannobio. Cannobio is situated where the wind funnels through the narrow part of Lago Maggiore and is an exquisite town with a beautiful promenade, cobbled streets, abundant accommodation and weekly market stalls. Each year entry numbers grow, this year helped by charter boats from RS Sailing being made available. Each fleet had their own start, and the RS Aero 9 had an impressively good showing of 19 boats.

18 RS Aeros joined the International RS Aero Class Training organised by Jorn Domres of the German Class held over the three days prior to three more days racing, for some early season training and a whole week in the Italian mountains. Raffaele Ravaglia conducted the training with a mixture of on the water exercises, coached racing and theory sessions ashore with the participants all benefiting from the experience.

Conditions for the racing on Friday and Saturday were challenging for the race team with unseasonal wet weather hitting the high mountains at the Northern end of the lake causing the usual thermal lake breeze, funnelled through the narrow lake at Cannobio, to be less reliable. Nevertheless the team lead by Ulli Scheu managed two races on each day, efficiently turning round the three fleets when the breeze was present. Day 3 saw glorious conditions with sunny skies and a steady southern wind. The race team managed all four of the permitted races before the last day cut off time, enabling the second discard to kick in.

The host club Circolo Velico del Leone, were magnificent hosts, being immensely friendly and helpful and with the help of their volunteers and assistance from YC Ascona, providing a three course dinner with wine for all competitors and families on the Saturday night, enjoying the regatta dinner Risotto Party hosted at Oratorio Don Silvio Gallotti. Frank Hoogland (SUI) celebrated his birthday by winning the raffle for the new locally hand crafted RS Aero trophy! Thanks to all the sponsors who added to the event!

With the boat park being on the grass beside the lake right next to the town, launching couldn’t have been easier and the walk to the nearest hostelry for post race discussion was just 50 metres.

Each year sees new faces at this event, adding to the regulars who just want to keep coming back.

The next main international event on the RS Aero calendar is the upcoming RS Aero World and Youth World Championships at Quiberon France, 27 July - 2 Aug with over 100 RS Aeros entered already. Complete your entry by this Sunday 15th June to secure the lower entry fee.

Lago Maggiore International RS Aero Regatta - Cannobio, Italy, 6-8th June

DAY 1

45 entries from 10 nations sees the largest ever turnout at the Lago Maggiore International RS Aero Regatta at Cannobio!
After 18+ RS Aeros took part in three days of training run by the German Class racing started in earnest today. Friday 6th June, and continues through to Sunday.
The entry is split over RS Aero 6, 7 & 9 fleets. The early morning down-pour gave way on time for some heat and sunshine. 2 light wind races to be held for the RS Aero 9 & 7 fleet and just 1 for the RS Aero 6s. The course saw some occasional shifts of up to 15' and a regular pressure advantage to the right, but all in all it was good level racing in the soft conditions.

RESULTS to date (racing concludes Sunday 8th)

Lago Maggiore International RS Aero Regatta - CV del Leone, Cannobio, Italy, 6-8th June
For the Swiss Championship we return to Cannobio, Lago Maggiore, in June or our 7th International RS Aero Regatta on this beautiful Italian great lake, where Circilo Velico del Leone will host us again after last year's wonderful event. This is a combined Swiss/Italian venture, being right on the border.

ONLINE ENTRY
32 entries now from no less than 9 nations. A truly International Regatta!
The RS Aero 6 and 9 fleets are looking strong with 14 each so far. There is plenty of space for some more RS Aero 7 entries please. We can usually expect medium/light breezes at the narrows off Cannobio so, like last year, maybe there will not be an RS Aero 5 fleet this time.

THE LOCATION is ideal: a very picturesque little town with lots of waterfront bars, ice cream parlours and restaurants with a long beach and lido. There are lots of B&Bs, nice hotels and several campsites to choose from on the waterfront.

THE DATE
is 3 weeks later than last year, by which time there will be some real heat in the Italian sun!

TRAINING DAYS -
Similar to previous years at Lago Maggiore there will once again be 3 days of racing from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th, following a Training Clinic of 3 days from Tuesday 3rd - Thursday 5th enabling a wonderful week at the beautiful Italian great lake.

CHARTER RS AEROS - RS Sailing are supplying charter RS Aeros and they may be booked HERE .
*Just 2 remaining now!

Lago Maggiore is the most westerly of the three large pre-alpine lakes of Italy. Whilst most of the Lake's length is in Italy its alpine northern tip rests in Switzerland. Beautiful mountains, fair breezes and a wonderful culture make Lago Maggiore an event not to be missed!

May-July sees the best wind and weather at Lago Maggiore. The best area for racing is just off Cannobio in the ”Canalone”. Here the lake narrows and the wind is stronger due to the funnelling effect. In the morning the 'Tramontana' wind descends from the north and then in the afternoon the 'Inverna' blows from the south. There is the possibility of two good racing sessions each day in both the morning breeze and then the opposite direction afternoon breeze. This allows for a nice coffee and early lunch break in between, whilst the wind thermal reverses, providing a wonderful variety of conditions and maximising our racing opportunity.

Fun Fact:  Lago Maggiore is the longest lake in Italy and the lowest point in Switzerland!
