Bloody Mary (Sailjuice) - Queen Mary SC, West London, UK, Sat 11th Jan
Congratulations to Ben Flower on sailing his RS Aero 9 to 4th place from 99 entries at this year's Bloody Mary pursuit race.
The wind was painfully light - there was barely any! In between the 3-4kn zephys the fleet would spend time becalmed and struggling to make headway. But it was sunny, and it was now the turn of the light wind experts after a few windy years...
The Fireflies had their day starting early and the lead Firefly of Jono & Freddie Pank maintained a sufficient lead to take the win.
Ben's RS Aero 9 started a minute behind Tom Gillard and Rachael Gray's Scorpion and that distance remained fairly consistent through the race as they both steadily picked their way through the leading slower boats consisting of Solos, British Moth, Fireflies, N12 and Enterprises. Tom pulled through to 2nd, to finish about a minute behind the Firefly, and in the final moments the mighty Thames A-Rater slid through to pass Ben and take the 3rd.

The annual Bloody Mary and its large turnouts represents an intriguing PY challenge. With the Pursuit format there is the benefit of Class starts within the larger race, followed by all the fun of the 'chase and be chased'!
