Home >> Transport & Storage >> Strapping to afix RS Aero to car roof bars
Sounds the same as I do. have roof topped many miles including to Carnac. Boat tied to trolley at the back of the troley. (Simple over the top with a loop at the far side to get purchase to tighten. Front tied to trolley under the bow rubber. Then trolley tied to the roof bars at four points where it touches. On Skoda Octavia the axle of the trolley is just behind back bar so tieing axle to bar is very solid. I keep a rug in the car which I use over the spoiler (tied to tailgat to stop it slipping) when putting boat up. Lift bow onto carpet, slide boat up the rug and then forwards on bars. Often do it solo but very easy with two.

We have been using a Kari-tek system for roof transportation . It allows two people not 3-4 to load the boat quickly and safely on to the roof.  Used this system on six different vehicles now and transported the Aero to Sweden and France last year with no problems at all . Obviously saves money on the ferry with no trailer etc . The new launch trailer moulds hold the boat in place to allow easy strapping it's really very simple to use .

Issy and I tend to use a lashing method, usually started off with a clove hitch and then finishing with a series of hitches. If you google 'rope lashing' you will get a guide on the best approach.

Will try to upload some photos or alternatively, send your email to [email protected] and we will send some pictures.

Thanks Issy - that is really helpful.  And for the tying at the 4 points, did you use rope or strapping?  and if you used rope, what knots did you use to get them nice and tight?

Liz, I roof topped mine quite a distance in high winds and it stayed there ok, still attached to the roof bars and the roof bars still attached to the car. An HGV in front of me got blown over though!  I tie the boat to the trolley with rope that has some carpet threaded onto it to protect the gunwhales.  It's tied across the middle, at the trolley axle, the same near the bow at the trolley cross bar and then bow to the trolley handle.  I then tie to the roof bars at the 4 points where ithe trolley sits on them.  It was still secure after the 450 mile trip!

I've transported my Aero a few times, but tbh I'm never quite happy with the way I fix it to the roof bars. Trying to avoid strains on the boat, while making sure it is securely fastened and not too time-consuming to tie and untie.  Is there a recommended way to do this?

My current method is to attach a strap to the bow from the towing point on the front of my car, straps to each corner where trolley meets the bars, and a fairly tight strap that goes round the boat and through the back doors of the car.  (Boat secured to trolley at bow and midships.)
