Congratulations to Sarah Press (and to Ken too!), the Race To Scotland hard working 'Press Officer', who has picked up the 'Report of the Month' accolade for her great account of the final days of Race To Scotland in Yachts and Yachting.
Well deserved and thanks to her for all her great accounts of Kens epic adventure to Scotland.
Ken also delivered a wonderful evening presentation earlier this month in Christchurch, with a full account of his most excellent adventure.

WELL DONE KEN!
I went 3 miles offshore today in a club race from Lymington to Christchurch Ledge and felt exposed - but that does not compare!

RACE TO SCOTLAND Another big day for Ken yesterday. Over 2 and half hours of hanging on sailing down waves and big seas on the run at the end of the leg from Tobermory to Mallaig. The reward was that they were fast miles and in a straight line.
Hopefully an easier day today, with more awesome scenery, downwind around the back of Skye with some tide underneath him.
Ken has now sailed 675 miles in 17 days. He has 193 miles left to cover and only 7 days to do it - assuming he sails every day. It's going to the wire!

RACE TO SCOTLAND After a big crossing of Cardigan Bay last week and reaching the Isle of Man on Saturday Ken is once again on the move. Once again he is looking very small in the middle of the ocean as today he completes his crossing of the Irish Sea, northwards to reach SCOTLAND, after the predicted enforced break in the Isle of Man.
Thanks to RS Aero sailors Mike and Helen for looking after him so well and providing rib support. We now have five RS Aeros at the Isle of Man and we look forward to seeing some of them at this summer's various Championships.
After a slow start Ken has now sped up to over 5kn and with the breeze in the SW and increasing through the day it looks like he has a dreamy day of 10 hours or so broad reaching! He is sporting the blue flash of his RS Aero 5 rig today as he had to logistically pick one rig to enter and exit the IOM and with the prospect of breeze he sensibly played safe. He now just needs to maintain that speed to make landfall in good time - ideally at Portpatrick, otherwise Port Logan.
Should we be donating when he is having so much fun? Of course! Because his endeavour is an inspiration to us all and is in aid of two worthwhile causes, Cancer Reaserch and the Oakhaven Hospice.
18:15 update: he is past Port Logan! However with 6 miles still to Portpatrick he seems to be slowing. Tide maybe?

RACE TO SCOTLAND - Day 3 Another challenging day for Ken sailing upwind, the third in a row! Maybe he would have been better of starting from John O Groats!
Great news though. After another long day he is closing on his Bude goal and from there he will be ready from his assault on this week's 'summit' - the crossing of the Bristol Channel to the tip of south Wales.

7 days to lift off and Ken is in the final stages of preparation testing his deck pads, tiller grip, video GPS, nav equipment, storage etc... in the seas off Hengistbury Head, Christchurch.
Here is a 15 second clip of what he will be doing for over 900 miles past some of the UKs most beautiful coastline. A full fun overload whilst raising money for his worthy causes!

"Busy learning about the Garmin #VIRBULTRA30 ready for some great action shots on my trip. Took it out for a little test today through some "gnarly" waves off Hengistbury Head. The waves and tide brought a 30ft yacht almost to a standstill but the RS Sailing Aero just ducked and dived between them coming out half a mile ahead - but perhaps a little wetter on board the Aero! The voyage will take Ken in his RS Aero across expanses of sea and through the Scotish Islands, from corner to corner of Great Britain. What an inspiring adventure and all for two worthy cancer charities.
There is plenty of racing around cans to be done - nice to see people getting out and creating there own adventures too!Ken has just launched his Race to Scotland website too. Follow his adventures and please do show your support.

Ken Fowler makes light work of climbing back into his RS Aero whilst practicing off the Needles for his Race To Scotland. I think the cold water might have helped with his urgency!
- Pull up on the cockpit grab rail and then the toe strap
- A big leg kick as you pull will make a big difference
- Speed is important
- If you don't succeed at the side, then go for the transom

Great to see Ken Fowler getting to grips with his RS Aero at Christchurch, UK.
Saving 2 minutes every half hour could save 40 minutes a day, much more in a drying breeze or worsening tidal gate.

Managing to get out in the Aero a bit more before it turns really dark and cold out there. It's all about spending time on the water so thought I'd take the boat out for its first race on Sunday - to see how we are progressing with learning how the Aero sails.
Completely blown away by how quick it was and spent the race in a very unaccustomed first place well clear of the field with a big smile on my face.
Looking at the lasers behind in the main fleet makes me realise just how much time this boat can save me for next years Race To Scotland. Very important when you are going to be spending 8-10 hours sat on a small bit of epoxy/carbon bobbing up and down!

Take one hull, lots of bits of loose rope, some blocks and pulleys. Add a helpful friend (David) and one instruction manual and hey presto your bare boat hull is now a rigged sailing boat. Just add sails, foils and water and away you go.

RACE TO SCOTLAND with Ken Fowler of Highcliffe SC, Christchurch
Hooking up with Ken Fowler at Highcliffe SC at Christchurch, to help him prepare for his epic journey, was a fantastic way to spend a sunny morning. Next May Ken will sail from Lands End to John O' Groats, one corner of the UK to the other, in an RS Aero in aid of Cancer Research and the Oakhaven Hospice Trust, two causes very close to him.
There is so much to think about - Planning, safety, support, navigation, reliability and also important...speed! Ken is a professional in life and is meticulously covering all the bases. With 7 more months to prepare I look forward to more sessions assisting where I can to help Ken train and plan for his wonderful adventure and nobel cause.
Check out Ken's 'Race To Scotland' Facebook page for an insight into his preparations and his recent history of running part marathons and Isle of Wight navigations. Remember to give him a big warm Like while you're there and keep an eye out for his regular updates.
