Hi kleavy,
RS Aero spars are impregnated with resin, rather than being coated with it. That means they do not suffer any laquer peeling off and so do not need a regular rub down and re-coating like those which are made coated.

It takes several years to see any sign of colour fade due to UV, even if you leave your mast up. Even this can easily be avoided by dropping your mast under the boat cover between each outing as it only takes seconds. Your boat will also be safer then in case of any strong winds.

Our oldest RS Aero masts are 9 years old now. If you feel you have an issue it would be best to check with RS Sailing Cutsomer Support; [email protected] for their advice.

I am curious about this myself. I was planning on polishing mine with McLube HullKote which is commonly used on aluminum spars in other classes. This is my first carbon spar so not sure what kind of preventive maintenance will keep it in top shape.

Side note - some Star sailors order masts non-anodized from the factory. It is common to see them thrown into yacht club swimming pools after regattas to preserve the spar. Thankfully those days appear to be behind me.

Can anybody tell me if you need to varnish the RS Aero mast to protect it from uv damage?
