RS Aero Race Training - Sutton Bingham SC, Yeovil, Somerset, UK, 15th April

Thank you to Mike Riley for his report;
As the oldest sailor at the RS Aero sailing training session at Sutton Bingham Sailing Club on 15th April 2023, I was excited to learn how to improve from Coach Chris Jones and practice high tariff skills with fellow sailors. The weather conditions were variable, with a steady breeze in the morning that dropped off towards the end of the day. The group consisted of three visitors who were coastal sailors and three locals, the youngest two were Laser helms who were loaned RS Aero 7s by club members.

Chris introduced the session by asking us what we wanted to cover in the session. Before we went out on the water, Chris checked over our RS Aeros and gave advice on setup and rigging. I learned that my sail was too deep and my kicker needed shortening. Throughout the day, we focused on high tariff skills, in the morning it was starting with alternative exercises like hunt and hover, match racing, and short start lines. These exercises kept things interesting, and by the end of the morning, I felt my starts and acceleration had improved significantly.

Chris followed us during the short races and provided input on boat control, rig setup, and trim, which was really helpful. He debriefed us using videos shot on his phone and WhatsApped them to us, so we could study the footage at our leisure.
After a pleasant lunch in the sunshine, we practiced downwind sailing and leeward roundings, preceded by follow-my-leader to improve boat handling skills. The boats were all close at the leeward mark, so we had to apply boat handling and tactics knowledge Chris had covered in the classroom. Although the wind dropped off towards the end of the training session, this presented a new challenge and the opportunity to practice in a variety of conditions.

At the end of the afternoon session, Chris shared more videos with us and debriefed about what went well. Overall, I found the training session to be challenging but enjoyable, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to practice skills, receive feedback and coaching, and spend a beautiful day on the water with my fellow sailors. Despite the age differences between the sailors, we worked together well and were supportive of each other throughout the training session. The more experienced sailors provided valuable guidance and advice to the less experienced sailors, which helped them to improve their skills. One of the visiting sailors remarked on the ease of practicing new skills without the challenges of waves and tides, which meant more learning was achieved.

Overall, the RS Aero sailing training session at Sutton Bingham SC was a great success. The favourable wind and weather conditions, combined with the expertise and support of the sailors, provided an ideal environment for learning and practicing more RS Aero skills.
