The Great Lakes PY's came about because the RYA system was too slow to adjust to the many changes in various fleets, e.g. the carbon rigs added to certain classes, lightening of hulls, etc. but the PY's didn't change.
The PY's were taken from all the sailjuice series events to create a more accurate PY list for those types of events.
Over the years the RYA system has changed quite a bit because of this system and is now getting up to speed and the numbers are moving more towards the great lakes numbers.

Andy,
Those 'Great Lakes' clubs are a group of lager lakes that sought a revised number set to suit their type of sailing waters. As you might expect, faster boats are mostly penalised a little as they can stretch their legs and slower boats that are more suited to the nip and tuck on smaller ponds may have a more favourable number.

I believe they do use them (or an approximation there of)) for their general racing too. However, as per the RYA PYs all clubs are recommended to adjust numbers to suit their locality, so they may operate independently too.

A few other clubs adopt the GL numbers too - one is StarcrossYC, with their 'Steamer' on the 17th Jan, as they find those numbers suit their water better than the RYA PY.

Thanks for the link to the Great Lakes handicap information.  It's the first time I've heard of it, and haven't made it to any of the Winter Series events yet.  Do these clubs use the same information for their own handicap racing, and do any other Aero clubs make use of them?  Our (small) club uses the published Portsmouth Yardsticks which seem to work OK across the small number of different classes we usually have racing.

The Oxford Blue Overall
From the 121 starters our lead RS Aero 7s were 11th, 14th and 17th and the first RS Aero 5 was 33rd. RS Aeros were spread throughout the results suggesting the Great Lakes PYs used for the SailJuice series to be about right relative to other classes. After last winter's cautious initial handicap numbers I think we can be pretty happy with 'about right'!

Full overall results of The Oxford Blue can be found here;

Andy,
The SailJuice Winter series are run off the 'Great Lakes' handicap numbers which give;
RS Aero 9 = 1031, RS Aero 7 = 1059, RS Aero 5 = 1101

as opposed to the 'RYA PY' numbers which give;
RS Aero 9 = 1030, RS Aero 7 = 1065, RS Aero 5 = 1105

An explanation of Great Lakes numbers is here;
Different method and different data, but it produces very similar numbers which is encouraging

The RYA PY numbers are produced just in time for the UK Dinghy Show each year, which is normally the first weekend of March.

I see that the Aero 7s were sailing off a yardstick of 1059 at Farmoor.  Is that the local figure, or an indication of what we can all expect for 2016? I haven't seen any RYA figures for 2016 yet - they are published in February aren't they?

Last call for the Winter Champs!

The RS Aero entry has now surged up to 24! Just two more needed to beat last years entry...

We have mainly '7' rigs entered so far with a flurry of '5's too - but it could all change at registration, although with the likelihood of a good medium breeze maybe it won't.
The forecast is still great; 'windy side of medium' - fresh but not frightening, little chance of rain and a tropical 11'C...you can not ask for much more than that!

Load up over New Year and enter here to escape having to take the Christmas decorations down;

Detail and links here;

18 now entered, can we beat last years 25? That would be incredible! The forecast looks fine - nothing extreme to cause concern! Likely moderate medium breezes with little chance of any rain and a mild 7'C. You can confirm rig sizes at registration so no need to leave entry to the last minute waiting for the forecast.
