SI amendment -
4 races tomorrow (Sunday).
The Race Officer does not believe the wind will arrive in time to make an earlier start worthwhile.

UK NATIONALS...Miscellaneous-

JOINING INSTRUCTIONS
Sat-Nav users be aware that there is a new dual carriageway all the way to Torquay, built in readiness for our Champs and connecting Torquay to the world motorway network. For the last few miles follow road signs rather than your sat-nav, unless you have had a recent update.
Drive to Haldon Pier on the east side of Torquay Harbour where boats will be unloaded and kept for the Championship. Trailers will go as efficiently as possible at the end of Haldon Pier.
The car park is adjacent and the Royal Torbay YC immediately beyond in Beacon Hill.
The height barrier to the top floor of the car will be unlocked and RTYC will have stewards on site early Thursday am
Trolley Stickers will be available at registration at the Class Members discount rate of £2. For recovery after sailing on Thurs, Fri and Saturday we can use whichever trolley we are handed, therefore only having the effort of matching trolley to boat on Sunday for pack up.
Food and refreshment will be available throughout the day at the Royal Torbay YC.

Key players at RTYC;
Julia will co-ordinate all harbourside matters to include parking, trailers, trolleys, launching and recovery, tallies, shoreside signals etc.
Jan will mastermind registration, with some assistance from the class (a couple of volunteers would be welcome please.)
David Rayment is our PRO, very kindly stepping in to substitute through necessity at the last minute.

THURSDAY'S SCHEDULE
09:00 Registration opens in RTYC, Allocation Charter boats on Haldon Pier
11:00 Briefing on RS Aero specifics for new RS Aero sailors, Haldon Pier.
11:15 Briefing on Tuning & Techniques
12:00 Lunch and change.
12:45 Launch for Short 'n Sharp coached races through to 14:45.
15:00 RS Aero Challenge Cup, 'All Aeros' PY race.
18:00 Coaching Debrief RTYC
18:15 Informal Class Meeting RTYC
19:00 Commodores Reception - Grand Opening Ceremony
21:00 The Hole in the Wall Pub

UK CLASS MEETING - RTYC, Thursday 2nd June 18:15
Similar to last year in Weymouth, an informal meeting is proposed for the 45 minutes preceding the Grand Opening Ceremony at 19:00.
We can discuss initiatives, evolvement of the UK Class, the RS Aeros themselves etc. and have a good brain storm to consolidate progress made and look to the future....Bring your ideas!
The UK AGM is 18:00 Friday 3rd which can then be kept to more formal matters.

RS AERO CHALLENGE CUP - 'All Aeros PY' - Thurs 2nd 15:00
Our 2016 RYA PY numbers a pretty good in medium breezes. However, like in any class, different wind strengths favour different boats and RS Aero 9s can be disadvantaged in breezy conditions in the same way that RS Aero 5s can struggle to be competitive on standard PYs in light winds.
In accordance with SI 20.10 there will be a notice with regards to the PYs to be used posted on the official notice board by 20:00hrs on Wednesday 1st June.
It is proposed to run three sets of PY numbers with the race officer making a call on which one to use based on his wind instruments at the committee boat in the run up to the 5 minute gun.
The medium winds set will likely be the standard 2016 RYA PYs. The strong and light wind sets will go some way to even things up, but without tipping the balance.
This will amend Class Rule C.1.3

TROLLEY STICKERS
73 RS Aero sailors will recall the challenges we had when we came ashore at the first UK Nationals at Weymouth last year to try to find our trolleys from piles of 73 near identical ones!

We have worked to produce a solution going forward. Thanks to our UK Class chairman, Peter Townend, for the initial designs & prototypes and then to RS for taking the project on.

We now have available super smart stickers that will wrap around the front square post of our trolleys displaying our sail numbers on either side, plus RS Aero on the front for when we are mixed fleet racing.

Simply wrap the sticker around the upright of your trolley with 'RS Aero' facing forwards. The digital numbers ‘8888’ are already there on each side and you can form your own sail number by simply peeling off the individual segments of the digital ‘8’s, like our sail numbers are formed.

These are available from RS Sailing at £5 each.
However, for UK Class Association Members the UK Class Association has made a bulk purchase from RS and by negotiation and subsidy can offer them at upcoming events (starting with the UK Nationals) at the discount rate of just £2.

I hope at that price every member will be keen to buy one, they are very smart and will assist tremendously when you are keen to get back ashore!

UK Class Members who want too get their sticker mailed rather than wait can email me at [email protected] with their postal address and sail number and I can give them details off how they can pay £2.60 (to include postage) by paypal, bank transfer or cheque and I will mail the sticker to them.

Additionally, these should be available at major International events;
Travemunde Europeans, Garda Aerocup and the US Champs at Cascade Locks.

Trolley Stickers with pre printed sail numbers will kindly be provided by RS with all new RS Aeros going forwards.

Say goodbye to the days not being able to easy identify your trolley!

*UK NATIONALS ‘ANY TROLLEY’ POLICY;
- We propose an 'ANY TROLLEY' policy when we come ashore on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Thus, the RTYC shore team will only have to match trollies to Aeros on the Sunday when we pack to go home. All trollies are all gunwale hung, near identical and still nearly new, so I hope everyone will be happy with this.
- In addition to the Class trolley stickers RTYC shall add their own ID tags to all trolleys.

Charles,
Well spotted. The Sailing Instructions description of Class Fags for this event is correct.
This batch of Class Flags do not match the sail flash colours (they do have rig numbers), it is the intention to match them going forward in the next batch of flags.

Are the class flag colours different to the colour patches on the sails?

"Colour flashes on sails
Issue; Rigs not easily identifiable at a glance to Race Committees, Competitors and Spectators.
Conclusion; Add colour flashes to the back of windows (9=pink, 7=yellow, 5=light blue, as per class. flags)."

DOUBLE TAKE
With the 1000th RS Aero delivery imminent it is only to be expected that we will have some RS Aero owners with the same name and we have several name sake pairs already. However, I did have a double take yesterday morning when two sailors entered the UK Nationals with the same name, within 2 hours of each other! They must be conspiring to confuse me!
UK Nationals early entry discount ends tomorrow. Up to 59 now!

Thanks Richard, I've only replayed off my iPhone, I'll have to reclaim my laptop from my son. The arm band is from a company called "Overboard", I think their base is around Brisbane Queensland. Andrew

Andrew,
The max speed figure on the phone is often spuriously high, but once the track has been uploaded and RaceQs has done its processing the numbers become normal. I expect it is due to anomalous GPS spikes that then get smoothed.
Which armband are you using to hold the phone?

I use the raceQs via my iPhone in a water proof arm band attached to the mast at deck level. You can't see the phone whilst sailing but does give some interesting feedback after sailing, anyway, has anyone else found that top speed readings are far too high? My last outing in gusts hitting 25 knots I recorded a top speed of over 28 knots which didn't show up on the speed over ground replay which peaked at 16.2 knots on a known gust. Andrew

I didn't know RaceQs had that functionality. It does have the ability to save mark positions to use for course set up later. For me, I just have it in my pocket on auto record and analyse the racing afterwards. In order to use it 'live' you would have to mount you phone on your wrist and try and operate the touch screen with wet hands - not really practical. When yacht racing I have my phone mounted in the saloon so it tracks heel angle, so again, not in a position to use live. The live broadcast feature is delayed 5 mins to stop people gaining an advantage, although I'm not sure how you'd manage that anyway in a busy Aero race!

Is there a way RaceQS can tell you that?  I know StartStar can. I don't use RaceQS on the course. I just have it passively tracking so I can replay later (and also see the tracks of others who also have it on).

Is raceqs race legal? Surely the vibrate when you are going to be too early for the line or if a wind shift happens is a big help, also helps with tides?

RaceQS is great - I use it most races so if we can get lots of people to use it at the nationals we can do some really good replay.

Very much looking forward to welcoming you all to Torbay and to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club for the Aero nationals. I hope I can get some practice in before you all arrive.
There is lots to do and plenty of places to stay in Torbay so if anyone has any queries I will do my best to answer.
For those of you not yet entered and maybe struggling to find accommodation or having budget issues I can offer some spaces at my house, which is about 25 mins walk/10 min drive from the club. First come, first served. Please email me [email protected]. PB, you're already in.
Finally for those of you who carry your phones with you or have other GPS tracking devices I have been using a free app/website called RaceQs to record my racing. It is very informative to look at afterwards to analyse how you sailed, but is MUCH more interesting if other boats in the fleet also record. I am happy to set up the courses afterwards and there is a regatta function I will look into. Happy for anyone to search for me (Richard Perriss) on the RaceQs site and view my tracks.
See you soon.

UK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, TORQUAY, 2-5 JUNE
45 entries now, nearly in the 50+ club again!

EARLY ENTRY DISCOUNT
Just nine more days until the early entry discount for paying by the 18th May ends. After that the higher rate is payable. Get those entries in now to avoid missing it at the last minute. If you are awaiting confirmation of your class membership number you can leave that box '0' on the entry form provided you have applied for membership.

FAMILY FORTUNES
This year we are already seeing a big increase in family 'teams' (last year this category included the RS Teras). The family team prize is for the best combined result of two family members and I can think of several more families who are still to enter...

RS have kindly gifted 50 of these for the first 50 entries and just 5 remain, for the next 5 entries. These are performance enhancing, environmentally friendly and super cool too. Don't miss out!

SINGLE SPACE CAMPERS
Good news, we have confirmation from Royal Torbay Yacht Club that we have the exclusive use of the top floor of the car park outside the Yacht Club. This applies to the front (harbour side) part through the yellow barrier. There is a height restriction but RTYC will have a key.

Single space campers are able to stay there overnight. There is no need to register; it will be first come first served.

All users are still required to pay the appropriate fee.
For overnighters I am not sure what the fee is, but likely good value for the convenience of being right outside the Yacht Club.

The English Riviera website covers it all HERE.

Beaches
Oddicombe Beach - nearby at Babbacombe, accessed by its Cliff Railway

Hotel Accommodation

If you're the kind of camper who prefers en-suite and would like to stay within walking distance of  your Aero the Premier Inn at Torquay looks a good bet.

Though its address is a side road leading off the seafront it actually fronts onto the sea with a good view over to the RTYC, boatpark, and slipways.

And looks to be a reasonable walk to & from.

It's own car parking isn't great but there is substantial public car parking close by.

But that is true of the majority of town centre accommodation.

And I'm booked!!

Here's the web link:-

Hi Gareth,
Sorry I overlooked your message in the excitement of Barcelona...

At the Torquay Nationals in 2016 the RS Aeros will be 'going it alone'. I did look into the possibility of incorporating an RS Tera regatta to enable offspring/siblings to join us in their Teras but with a whole extra race area required it would have taken away too much resource.

Generally;
- 2016 sees the RS Aero Class link up with other RS Classes much more. ‘Joining the party’ we have shared venues at our Spring Champs, Southern Champs, Europeans and End of Seasons.
- At the Czech Open in May we join the RS Feva Europeans ay Lake Lipno and will provide an opportunity for Feva parents, who might have otherwise been struck ashore, to join us in Aeros.
- At our UK Winter Training we join the Tera squad again for the 3 weekends after new year.

2016 calendar here (more events to come);  http://www.rsaerosailing.org/index.asp?p=events&vw=C&rg=UK

Great venue.  Are we planning to share with any other RS fleet (like the Teras) again or are we going it alone?

RS AERO UK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016
Royal Torbay Yacht Club, Torquay, Devon - 2nd-5th June 2016

We are delighted to announce the dates and venue of the 2016 UK Nationals!

Following the 2015 Championship's gigantic success at Weymouth with approaching 80 entries at our first Nationals we needed to give careful consideration to dates and venue to ensure the 2016 champs will continue to build on that success, allowing as many sailors as possible to compete.

Royal Torbay have great recent success and a long history in running major championships right back to the 1948 Olympics and beyond! Their race area of Torbay is a fantastic and varied sailing water. Sheltered launching exists into the harbour down their 12m wide slipway. The clubhouse is spacious, very comfortable, enjoys views across the bay and their members are ever welcoming. The attractions of Torquay are immediately to hand whether you are an accompanying family looking for daytime activities or have remaining energy seeking late night revelry!

The earlier date stays within school holidays by being the end of the half term week, allows a nice build up to the summer European Championship and avoids any major clashes.

The current proposal is that the Championship Series will be held over 3 days Friday 3rd - Sunday 5th.
Thursday 2nd will be a Coaching day with an additional 'All Aeros' mass start one-off PY race at the end of the day for the RS Aero Challenge Cup.

Updates HERE in due course.
