Kruis van Heeg Race - Netherlands
Our intreped Dutch long distance race enthusiast, Gerard Vos, had another great race last month. This time he was at Kruis van Heeg in the north of the Netherlands. Thanks to Gerard for his report and video. Crank up the volume and hang onto your seats!
Gerard Vos;
As you know by now, I like to sail the “unusual” events! A nice example is “Het Kruis van Heeg”, a 1 day long distance event on a 10km long lake in the north of The Netherlands.
This year the 43rd edition. By its nature the entries are big boats and 2-3 person boats. I competed in the “open mix” (handicap) class.
The morning race was not the most exciting due to not much wind. The afternoon race had a nice 10+ knot wind. Much to my surprise we had to sail the “North East” course. I had anticipated “North” or “North West”. So I had to ask several boats where to sail to. I started in start group 4 and this became an increasing problem, because I overtook basically all the boats that started ahead of me. The last boat directed me wrong, but recognized that error in time.
I reduced all this to a 10 minute video: https://youtu.be/N7qyMUxF7l0?t=294
