How to Sail Away from Lockdown
by Axel Almersson, SWE
Axel Almersson is member of the RS Aero Sweden Youth Team and whilst stuck without regattas during the restrictions he arranged to bring his RS Aero friends together for a day's impromptu racing whilst respecting necessary social distancing and hygiene precautions. Obviously restrictions vary in different countries, but congratulations to Axel for restarting his RS Aero racing in Sweden. We look forward to meeting the growing number of Swedish RS Aero sailors at an international regatta as soon as we are able.
' How to Sail Away from Lockdown
How do you organise a competition without having a big fleet and reduce risk of infecting others in this pandemic? Well, I think I just found the solution for that. It’s more simple than it looks! Don’t make everything so serious and improvise a bit, then it all comes together!
I asked my Dad why all the competitions were cancelled even though we are social distancing in our own boats. He answered that he actually didn’t know why. If we just respect social distance in the harbour and not more functionaries than necessary we can make a fun regatta without any problems!
So, I organised a competition by myself at Malaren Vasteras in Sweden because no one else did it! We were only four sailors who competed so my Mom, Dad and Sister helped me to organise the competition. When the other three sailors arrived, their parents helped us on the sea. It wasn’t complicated at all! With small courses you can have great racing with just 4 RS Aeros. After five races, everybody went home happy having enjoyed a safe regatta! '
