Wurstfest Regatta - Canyon Lake, Texas, USA, Nov 4/5th

Thanks to the Viridian Team for their summary report;

There are many reasons why Viridian sailors have been regularly attending the annual Wurstfest Regatta at Lake Canyon Yacht Club in the Texas Hill Country. It is an easy road trip away, their club goes overboard in hosting and the setting is beautiful.

The next morning we set out with a fleet of eleven RS Aeros. There were three separate courses set up. One for the Sunfish/Portsmouth boats on the far end of the lake, one for the RS Aeros and ILCAs closest to the docks, and another for the Flying Scotts. Wind was light at our 11:30am start time, but we managed to finish four races before the 3pm time restriction, so the race committee decided to fit in one more. That is when the wind picked up to 20mph, which made for an exciting end of day on the water. It was a little too exciting for Ash Beatty, who was leading the pack on the upwind leg when a Daysailer from the Portsmouth fleet came charging through our course and knocked Ash's mast over with its spinnaker! Luckily, no damage to Ash or his RS Aero was done.

The Sunday morning 10am start was postponed due to fog that suppressed all wind, but by 10:30 boats hopefully set out as the sky was clearing and there was a light breeze starting to build. Sadly, at 11am the abandoned flag went up. Those of us already on the water were slowly making our way back to the dock when a Southeast wind suddenly appeared. A group of us took off to enjoy the good breeze as it's not all about wining a race, is it? We sail for the joy of skimming across the water, holding on to the wild wind who carries us.

Not that we don't appreciate doing well in a regatta too! The Viridian team took home three trophies! We are all looking forward to returning next year and making our stay even longer with an extra practice day to enjoy sailing on beautiful Canyon Lake.

Congratulations
to Hank Saurage (Pontchartrain YC) on the win in his RS Aero 7 from David Valentine (Viridian SC) in his RS Aero 9 and Duane Hebdige (Viridian SC) in a RS Aero 7, based on corrected time scoring.
