CLUB & FAMILY CHAMPS at the RS Aero UK National Championships - Hayling Island, UK
18/08/2021 - 22/08/2021
Write-Up
CLUB & FAMILY CHAMPS - at the RS Aero UK Nationals, Hayling Island SC, 18-22 AugustA fun focus of the UK Champs annually is the Club and Family Champs and with a whopping record 144 entries the Club and Family Champs were both set to be hotly contested this year.
The Club Champs requires the top three sailors' overall rankings from each club. For the Family Champs the top two from a family household are taken.
This year thirteen clubs qualified and were in the hunt with at least three sailors. Lymington Town is a regular contestant in the club stakes but this year a strong young team from Draycote and an incredible home team Armada of 35 RS Aeros from Hayling proved to be formidable competition for the coveted title.
Ultimately by the tightest of margins Lymington Town defended their title again on a tie break from Draycote, with Hayling Island coming in 3rd.
In the Family Champs fifteen teams contest the family title, with Team Ahlheid and Team Wharmby hedging their bets, both with 3 family competitors to allow them a discard! Last year’s champions and runners up teams were both made up of siblings (no parents required!) and the same happened this year too with no parents in the top three teams! Tim and Abbe Hire defended the title they won last year at Eastbourne with a 1,9. Harrison and Fergus Pye of Draycote were a strong close 2nd with a 4,8, followed by Tom and Tristan Ahlheid in 3rd with 3,12.
To approximately equate the three different sized fleets a multiplier of 5 was applied to the RS Aero 9 fleet.
