RS Aero UK National Championships at South Caernarvonshire YC, North Wales
67 RS Aeros at Abersoch for the UK Champs continued the build up to the World Champs in the UK in August - now with over 150 signed up!

RRS RULE 42 (Propulsion) and APPENDIX P
This evolvement, as we have already experienced at our previous European and World Champs, will help progress our understanding of Rule 42 as a Class and assist our good preparation towards this summer's World Champs.

We are fortunate to have the involvement of David Battye (RYA Rules Advisor North Wales & National Judge) at the UK Nationals and RRS Appendix P (with amendment) will apply with Yellow Flag penalties on the water.
David will provide a Rule 42 briefing on the middle deck of SCYC at 09:30 Friday together with after racing debriefs on Friday and Saturday.

Below is the beach access info from SCYC.
Additionally and in summary;
Arriving with boats
Please find below the BEACH PASS giving instructions and access to the beach
- Note the tides! No access to the beach around high tide. (Wed pm is good until 20:00, Thurs morning is high tide)
- Access the beach via Golf Road (LL53 7EF) half way down the beach (NOT the Yacht Club road)
- Trailers can stay on the beach
Car Parking
A discount rate of £15 has been negotiated with 'Griff' for the 4 nights. Buy a ticket at the green car park hut on the way up to the Club or buy at registration
Registration
Please ensure that any change in sail number (charterers) or change in rig size is recorded at registration.
Stickers
I will have a stock of National Flag stickers for sails and Trolley sail number stickers for sale at the event.
Also if anyone still needs a rig ID colour flash for their mainsail please ask me, no charge courtesy of RS Sailing.
Trolleys
Like normal for multi day events please use any trolley as you come ashore. On Sunday we will find our own ones again.

Dear Competitor
Thank you for your recent entry to the RS Aero UK National Championship & International Open 2018
Please use this letter of confirmation as your pass which will gain you free access to the main beach in Abersoch. It is imperative that you go directly to Golf Road, and do not drive to the Yacht Club with your trailer, as the congestion along our lane will become impassable. As you enter the main part of the village leave W & G Williams Garage on your left and go up the High Street, keep left as it merges into the Sarn Bach Road. Take the next left, with the Wylfa Hotel on the corner into Golf Road and proceed to the bottom of the hill. (Sat Nav post Code LL53 7EF)
The Beach Patrol personnel will do everything to assist you on arrival at the beach. They can be contacted on 07831 216043 so that you can verify accessibility to the beach at specific times of the day (beach crowdedness and tidal state will be the biggest factor)
Beach Control would like to highlight that competitor’s vehicles are only authorised to access the beach to the left of the main slipway to ‘drop off’ their boat. There is no necessity to allow vehicles to the left of the main slipway, as technically this is in direct breach of the beach bylaws; it is simply to make life easier for competitors who would otherwise need to walk their boat down the beach. There is a barrier to the slipway which opens at 09:00 and closes at 20:00.
Beach Control would also like to notify competitors that the newly constructed ‘trailer park’ on Lon Golff is for the use of the general public who launch from the main beach and not for competitors trailers. Vehicles are also prohibited from parking in the trailer park.
Tide Times. You cannot get onto the beach at high tide and an hour either side

RS Aero UK Nationals RS Aero UK Club Champs
This is the sum of the overall positions of the top three sailors from any club.
Team Estonia have touched down in Manchester already, set to defend their 2017 UK Nats Club team title for Pirita Svertpaadiklubi. Big teams are entered from Yorkshire Dales and Lymington Town to challenge them. Burghfield and Stokes Bay have their minimum of 3 sailors entered with no extra sailors - so no leeway!
RS Aero Family Fortunes
This is for the sum of the overall positions of the top two sailors from any family.
Seven family teams are entered! Brothers Whaley will race to defend their title. They will be challenged by the Cockerill, Caiger, Craven, Haavel, Martin and Willis families who between then have an incredible assortment of World, Aerocup, UK Inlands, Ladies, Youth, Masters and Florida State Championship Titles! Watch out Whaleys!
*Like last year we will add a multiplier to the '5' and '9' fleet positions as necessary to make them comparable to the '7' fleet.

UK ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER - Guest of Honour
Delighted to confirm that Volvo Ocean Racer and an inspiration to Ladies sailing, Abby Ehler, will be our special guest and present the annual awards at our RS Aero UK Class dinner at our Abersoch UK Nationals!
The Volvo Ocean Race left Newport USA on Sunday for Leg 9 for a speedy blast 3300nm across the North Atlantic to Cardiff, Wales and Abby is putting the pedal to the metal to arrive at Abersoch in time for dinner!
Abby's hubby Tom will be competing at Abersoch in their RS Aero!

RS AERO UK NATIONALS We are in the 50 club again!
This is our first year off the south coast and visiting the truly awesome, but isolated, Abersoch in North Wales.
With 112 sailors already registered for the World Champs just two months later we have nothing to prove with this years Nationals numbers , especially after entries of 73, 70 and 110 over our first three years. To achieve 50+ entries a few weeks in advance of this UK Nationals is great!
3 good fleets are emerging and competition is looking tough in each with all last year's Champions returning to try to defend their crowns. Indeed the 50th entry is Ben Whaley, 2nd in the mega RS Aero 7 fleet last year and looking to do one better in 2018 by knocking his brother Sam off the top spot!International flavour is added from Estonia once again, sending a team of 3 sailors. But rest easy UK title hunters...whilst Internationals may win the event the NoR (#14) has evolved this year such that the UK Title and Trophy will remain with the first UK national or resident in 2018. A sensible rule for any country's National Championship.

Our 2017 UK National Champion and member of the British Sailing Team, SAM WHALEY will deliver his top tips on how to get the most from your RS Aero at 16:00hrs Wed 30th May on Abersoch beach (All welcome. No charge!)
Sam Whaley won 6 out of the 8 races at the 2017 RS Aero 7 UK National Championships from a record fleet of 75 at Hayling Island, demonstrating great speed throughout the varied conditions.
Sam has kindly written this thoughtful insight on his blog on how he sought to achieve the most from his RS Aero around the race course.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED PLEASEIf you are family or friend of a competitor and happy to give a few hours to assist SCYC and the Class at the RS Aero UK Nationals at Abersoch we would really like to hear from you please. This is a great way to get involved for short stints and meet new friends!
The tasks requiring assistance are;

Can you help for a stint between Wed 30th May 17:00 to 19:00 and Thurs 31st May from 09:00 to 11:00?
Beach Master & Tally Board
There will be beach hut for the Tallies saving the sailors from coming up to the club to tally. Hand out and collect wrist bands to sailors from your deck chair!
Radio coms with race committee afloat to let them know when all Aeros have left the beach, who is not sailing and who returns having retired.
Safety Rib Crew
A great way to get afloat and close to the action of RS Aeros, seals and dolphins. Please let me know if you have a qualification
Ribs
Please let me know if you are thinking of bringing your own rib and are happy to assist on the racecourse.
Committee Boat Helpers
Assistance manning the flags and recording finishers - whilst trying not to be too distracted by the breath taking backdrop of the north Wales coastline and mountains!

On the afternoon before racing from 4pm for about an hour Sam Whaley will deliver a coaching session ashore on Abersoch beach - be there for some of his top tips on how to make an RS Aero sail very quickly!
Sam won the 2017 RS Aero 7 UK National Championship from a fleet of 75 RS Aero 7s at Hayling - the largest RS Aero fleet assembled to date.
Sam is a member of the British Sailing Team and currently up in 7th place in his Laser at the Hyeres World Series event! Good luck Sam!
