What struck me from this video was the big (6+ BL) gain at the top mark in less than 30 seconds. Getting onto a wave right away, keeping track of where one is on the racecourse (not sailing WAY by the lee for no reason), and keeping clear air can reap big dividends. A masthead fly really helps here.
The chop was close together and fairly steep, with occasionally larger swells. Definitely had to catch the big ones downwind (wherever they might take me), and use lulls to either head up/down to work back toward the mark. Obviously, awareness of where the boat is relative to rhumbline is essential.
Smooth turn around leeward mark with consistent heel throughout allows the blades to most efficiently transition from downwind to upwind work.
He must be allowed to steer around the wave in front and he heels the boat to assist this (to save rudder drag). It’s okay to adjust the sail in keeping with this. You can see the luff lifting showing that this is necessary and at other times the main is eased with no backing. This is totally kosher and efficient sailing.
Certainly a master class in tactics and boat handling, assume this is within rule 42.
So much could be learned from the control to get that boat speed.
Videos like this could be used in segments for training like sailing on toward the port layline and then off the wind faster to get the inside at the mark etc.
