Home >> Technical >> Movement of mast in mast step hole
Hi Adam,
Congatulations on your RS Aero!

The RS Aero's deck mast pot is oval shaped and it is a lose fit, your measurements sound about right. The oval shape allows the mast to turn freely and enables auto raking - the mast rakes back upwind and goes forward on the run.

All RS Aeros since #17--, and some between #1340 and #17-- have black plastic inserts into the deck mold to save wear on the gelcoat, but the dimension of the pot is the same. Earlier RS Aeros with white gelcoat deck pot tops are able to purchase the deck ring (mast pot collar protector) retro fit option, otherwise a viable alternative is simply to re-gelcoat the top rim of the pot periodically.

We purchased a used RS Aero and it’s mast appears to have a lot of movement when mounted in the mast step hole. The seller indicated there was a lost part and we are trying to identify the part. We purchased a part from Zim Sailing that was a hat shaped insert but it was larger than the hole. We have verified we have a mast collar on the mast and are thinking we may need the wing shaped mast step collar that bolts to the deck. Having bought one part that proved incorrect we are looking for some guidance. Our questions are: How much should the mast move in the mast step hole? Can we sail with just the collar that leaves just under 1/4inch / 6mm side to side and over 1/2inch / 12mm fore and aft movement. What part(s) are we missing? We will try to have attach photos of the current setup and gap. The RS manual does not cover this so any and all assistance would be appreciated.
