Home >> Technical >> Lost a batten
Hi Lcooley,
A method of adjusting the top two battens tension  I have found is to:

Grip the sail at the Leech end and push on the tension key.
There are two wings on the plastic tensioner that engage with two web loops on the sail leech.  When you push on the tensioner key and the wings have just taken up all the slack to the webbing loops, then it is bang on the onset of bending the sail.
Correct tension, or at least a very good starting point.

Hi Lcooley,
Need to ensure batten tensions are not so slack that they may escape and not so tight that they struggle to pop through in light winds or produce too much depth.
Just tight, but not taught - just take to creases out - is about right.

Removing battens is not permitted. Similar to sailing without any piece of standard equipment, it is not permitted unless specifically specified.

Sailing without the batten may de-power but in an inefficient way and it can't be good for the sail. To lose power out of the leach try giving the downhaul a good pull instead to open the leach up.

A flip today, while sailing in overpowering conditiions with a 7, caused my second batten from the top to come out and was lost. As I continued to sail, I felt in more control and less heel with the top of the leach twisting to windward. Has anyone else noticed this and is removing battens class leagle?
