Home >> Technical >> tiller extension length - getting jammed in the scuppers
I replaced the old extension with a 41-60" battlestick. The extension mount on the rudder is riveted on to the end of the carbon tiller. The Ronstan polyurethane u-joint doesn't fit in the mount without some trimming. That's annoying but less work than drilling out the rivets and trying to attach the Ronstan part to the tiller. I do like having the scuppers out, much easier to get back in via the transom.

this makes sense, the shock cord centering the tiller is what I'm looking for to keep the boat from circling when I'm trying to climb in.

Elastic to keep central helps. I have shortened the tiller by a couple of inches (legal but there are limits - check the rules). That helps with getting past the mainsheet without excessive steering. It's still long enough to sit well forward on flat water/light winds or fully hiked a bit further back in a blow or on the sea. Don't like round the back for tiller extn tacking makes you have your weight too far back and it isn't needed.

A piece of bungee over the tiller should help with this. It will keep the rudder central when recovering from capsize which makes it much easier to get back in without the boat heading off in random directions. And it's class legal  - rule C6.1.3 (n) (i).

Yes, mine occassionally gets jammed there.  I've found it useful to always store the rudder with the tiller and extension in a straight line, so the UJ gets 'trained' that way, the extension tends to be forward if I let go.  Useful to regain control on the occassions that you drop it by mistake

My tiller extension has to go, it's bent and the u-joint is going to fail soon. The length is 41 inches or105cm, just slightly longer than the tiller tube itself, just clears the main sheet forward.
When I'm launching or righting the boat, the extension always falls into the cockpit and jams in the corner or in the scuppers, which makes the boat fly around in circles until I can grab it and steer from the water. Raising the rudder before righting is probably the answer there.
I hike with the extension high across my chest for maximum sheeting/steering control. At that position sitting forward the extension could be 6" longer, but it will definitely not clear the mainsheet at that length. I do really need to work on tacking consistently, so rounding the extension aft while tacking is probably a good practice so as not to intefere with the main sheet.
Does anyone else get jammed in the scuppers? I would just remove the scuppers and fill the screw holes but that will violate class rules I'm sure.
