TopTip2020 #53 - Join in and have Fun - by Nigel Rolfe, GBR

Nigel Rolfe, of RS Aero Team Burghfield, is our past UK Class Chairman and has enjoyed a huge number of RS Aero events as one of our keenest competitors. Having been heard to joke; "we should only visit sailing clubs with bars" (I think he was joking?!), he raises the valuable insight, that Class value is within its community, bar or no bar!

' Join in and have Fun
You are sailing a great boat and have read all the tips. None of that matters without the real difference. Having raced boats where it was all about the racing, it lacked 'you'. The RS Aero is thriving and has fantastic participation due to the community spirit and support everyone has for one another, both on and off the water.

Who would have thought the leader of a World Championship would stand up and share their top tips. Why would they give away their secrets? Who wants to sail in a class where you cant have banter on the water without the risk of someone protesting you! Who wants to be in a class where the sailors don't smile on and off the water? It is interesting how many of us have had their sailing reignited since sailing the RS Aero. This is not just because of the great sailing but, the great community spirit along with the opportunity of fun with friends too. Yes, my liver has probably suffered, I did decorate the bathroom in Barcelona and I had thought I had forgotten to phone my wife (only to find out that I hadn't). I have made incredible life long friendships across the world (including the Scottish and the French) though and the day the bar is empty (of sailors) is the day to sail something else!

My top tip, "Join in and have Fun" and I look forward to seeing you at the next event soon! Nigel '
