Ask and you shall Receive!
by Madhavan Thirumalai, USA

Madhavan Thirumalai recommends to all RS Aero sailors whether starting out or an aspiring World Champ - just ASK! Sharing information makes our game more rewarding and enjoyable for everyone and you will find fellow RS Aeros sailors pleased to assist whether in the boat park or on the internet.

Most fleets and most sailors are very good about sharing information. It is a curious thing about our sport. Why would one competitor provide information to another? I tried to explain to non-sailors “the fleet gets better that way and we all have more fun” but they don’t quite get it.
The RS Aero fleet is particularly good about sharing info;
  • From Liam Willis I learned to keep the Cunningham on on a blast reach.
  • From Greg Bartlett I learned to sit further back going upwind in breeze.
  • From Derek Bottles I learned how to steer in waves and to be conservative going downwind in big waves, especially early in the regatta.
  • From Peter Barton I learned some match racing at Maggiore. Approaching the pin the boat on the right is trying to push, and the boat on the left is trying to slow and hook. Peter taught me to put bow down, the vang on and not touch the Cunningham till full powered.
  • From Marc Jacobi I learned many things. Here’s one - When sailing by the lee downwind in light air head up on the puff and ride it dead downwind.
So take full advantage of this great fleet that we are part of. Ask and you will receive!
