Home >> Class Rules - Queries & Suggestions >> Quick release vang
Hi AeroGerry & Jacques,
I hope that you are well. Sorry for no replying earlier.

It only takes about 3 minutes to swap an RS Aero rig (one shackle and undoing the knots in two lines - outhaul and vang end)
Please see Class Rule C.6.1.3(p).  Peter is correct, the substitute block at the gooseneck can only be 20mm.

Also, you cannot use a snap shackle because it is a different type of fitting
to that Originally Supplied. See C6.1.4(b)(x). With the loads going through that primary load point I would not want to trust a snap shackle with more points of potential failure. The Originally Supplied shackle is quick enough to operate.

However, you can use a rope shackle through the vang gooseneck pulley/block to attach the substitute 20mm block.

Happy sailing

I have two replacement hips. When I go sailing I need to choose carefully the appropriate sail. Un-treading the vang tail and re-threading it to the new lower mast is a pain and it is easy to get something wrong. Jacques Garrigues’s fast vang de-rigger has it attractions.

I am looking at using some sort of soft shackle which hopefully will meet class rules. If I get it to work I will post details.

When I return to shore I like to release the clew quickly from the boom. This reduces the risk of the Aero being blown over. I use a snap shackle to connect the vang to the bottom of the mast - very quick to release. Photo attached. (the block is not the block on my Aero)

According to Peter Barton my "fast vang de-rigger" is not legal on 2 accounts, first my 30 mm block can only be 20 mm and second, that 20 mm block needs to be tied off of the gooseneck vang sheave. My setup only goes around the mast and doesn't involve the sheave. What I am showing is a block with a spliced dynema rope that has a loop at the other end, then a soft attach shackle passes through this loop so that the vang line can be disconnected from the mast. After undoing the metal mast butt vang shackle, the vang and it's tail handle can remain attached to the boom, lay on the deck, and the mast can be swapped out. I am trying a new version which passes through the gooseneck sheave and should be legal. Anyt suggestions would be worth discussing.

Jaques, Anything to speed up changing rigs is helpful. I often turn up at the club and think I would like to sail the 9 rig on a light wind day, but due to the time it takes to swap I leave the 7 rig on.
I assume it is not available to purchase so could you describe how to make the rope attachment. It looks like it is spliced to secure the block and has an eye at the other end. Does it detach or slide off the top of the mast lower section?. Mike

Seems like a clever idea. That is the only thing that I personally find an annoyance (albiet small) is that the kicker control line goes through the mast block which means undoing the kicker control line continuously to fully derig the boat. Especially common for those who sit inbetween rigs, as we switch between them in order to sail according to the wind.

From Jacques Garrigues;

I would like to know if my new "quick release vang" setup is or could be class legal.
It will replace the use of the mast mounted sheave and makes derigging much easier and quicker.
My example uses a 30mm block which is superior to the 20 mm used in the RS Aero  mast, however a 20mm block could be used in my quick release too.
Also a significant part of my setup is that there are no metal shackles to deal with.
This idea has been used successfully on the Laser as well.
